Not been for a few years but we had no problems with any of our credit cards. Some issuers now expect you to inform them that you're going away and using them though.
Credit cards are usually not accepted in supermarkets, perhaps only in towns with a lot of tourists. If you're not sure always ask first before loading all your shopping in the trolly and then find out you can't pay.
CC's are accepted in most restaurants though, but again, always ask first.
Debit cards use is a bit of a problem as well because the majority of retailers aren't using the Chip+Pin system yet, the Dutch cards work with the magnet strip. This is also hit and miss, you never know when you are able to use it. This will take a few more years until all retailers are transferred to the Chip+Pin system unfortunately.

Hi we live just outside Maastricht on the Belgian - Dutch border, certainly in southern Holland credit cards are not accepted in supermarkets and only Dutch debit cards are accepted, even our Belgian debit cards are of no use in Dutch supermarkets, although you will have no problems using your Visa Card in restaurants, hotels, other retailers etc.
Hope this helps,
John.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Holland is not that credit or debit card friendly for visitors as they have their own system. Motorway service areas will take them for fuel no problem & so will large campsites, for anywhere else always make sure you have enough cash to cover, just in case.
