My wife has had the (clearly insane) idea of going camping en famille in France at October half term. My resistance so far has been futile, but it's obviously going to be cold/wet/dark and probably closed! (France, that is). Anyone able to help me stop her making a terrible mistake!!

Why not go??

I'd rather be cold and wet in France than cold and wet at home. You never know it might turn out nice.

Sorry that's not the answer you wanted but as we all know.......

In the words of the Borg..........Resistance 'is' futile....

We were near Paris last october and stayed in a static and it was fine

Lots of leaves falling off the trees and weather nice

Are you taking a tent or a caravan or staying in a static?

If you go right down to the south you have a good chance of warm weather in October but you will need to research your campsite as many close in early Sept once the season is over even right down south.

If you dont want to travel 6-700miles once in France there are campsites still open on the north coast but if you are thinking of tent camping it might be better to rent a mobile home at that time of yr. you will be suprised how cheap they are compared with UK prices.

Decide what area you want to go to & then you will get more specific help on here.

Camping Campix about thirty miles north of Paris near Chantilly positively encourages campfires, we go every easter. Its a "proper" camping experience, deep in the woods, the smell of woodsmoke etc. Only a 20 minute drive to the outer reaches of the metro so very handy for day trips into Paris.

Thanks for the responses - I genuinely thought (still do a bit) that it will be pretty marginal for tent camping - the mobile home idea is a good one, and that Camping Campix looks good - if it's sheltered, camping might still be an option. The lady's not for turning at the moment...

We've been to the South of France twice in the last 3 years in October.

Cheap Ryanair flights, hire a car, the first time in a static/chalet, the second time in a gite. Teravelling from North-East Scotland to the South of France by car just wouldn't be feasible for a week.

We've been in Perpignan area in mid November, and it was still warm enough to swim in the sea!  It's not guaranteed, obviously, but some places will still be having lovely weather, albeit for less hours than in the summer.

We've compromised on a gite, and we'll see what it's like at that time of year - maybe tent next time. thanks for all the replies...

We go in October nearly every year. We stay in the van. We've had some brilliant weather. Bit chilly at night but beautiful during the day. Go for it you'll love it.

We've had guests camp here in October before, and they've been ok. It isn't the weather that makes you cold, it's not having the right clothes or sleeping bags and stuff like that. camping in France is doable at that time of year, but most of the French sites are indeed closed. Choose your area well, do some research into what attractions are still open and do have a bad weather plan. If in a gite, then it's not so bad if the weather does close in on you. At least you still have the telly!
