Hi,

We have travelled several times in France and this year are landing in Zeebrugge en route to near Royan on the West Coast from the 3rd week of July.

We have a stopover in Blois near Tours and according to the route planner the quickest way takes us past the eastern side of Paris with a stretch on the Peripherique.

Can anyone advise how busy this section of Paris is and whether it is worth avoiding by going via Rouen and Chartres/Dreux etc.

We are towing a twin axle and I am happy to go a longer route if Paris is too hectic. We will pass Paris on a Friday going and Saturday on the return leg.

Any advice or suggstions of a decent route welcomed. Happy to pay tolls if the route is right and we do have a european Satnav.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers

Nick

From Zee you would be going a bit out of your way going Rouen way. It is about 70mls further but only half the toll cost.

I would assume you would get to Paris about midday which would be quietest daytime period so if you aint worried about cost of tolls go that way.

Paris route is ok.  we use it most of the time when going to the Dordogne.  My reservation in what you say is that you will be travelling on a Friday on the 3 weekend of July - this will be a busy 'exodus'  weekend for many Parisiens.  If you can get through before 2pm ish then it might be ok.  Also be prepared for queues at tolls to the south of Paris from mid-afternoon onwards.

We have never found traffic congestion a problem nor has towing the van on the Périph been a problem.  There is a route further to the east avoiding the Périph which I use too - but it's not really that much different time or traffic wise.  Approach Paris with a full tank you don't want to be looking for a service station.

Hi Nick

Much would depend on when you hit Paris on a Friday, and 3rd week July might be compounded with start of a French holiday departure. Although rumour has it that less French people are going on a major summer holiday, so in general, congestion may be less this year.

My choice with a long outfit, would be to go via Rouen, stay with the autoroutes, ( assumiing you are happy to pay), A28 to Le Mans, then on to Angers, and head for the A83 coast road, past La Rochelle. 895 kms by Michelin vs 810kms Paris, 1hr extra driving, but a lot less hassle, and misses a potential 2/3 hr elay round Paris. Overnight stay north of Le Mans, or south thereof if you are ahead of yourself.

Return trip on a Sunday, again depends on how many weeks you are away, but I would be wary of the French holiday return/changeover, when a lot come back home, and a fresh lot go.  Try it if you really want to see that route, but if you are sailing out of Zeebee, you certainly don't want to miss your boat.

FM

We've stopped near Blois for the last 3 years, travelling from Zeebrugge. We went round Paris on the A104/N104 Franciliene. Never had a problem.

We do this every year en route to Royan.   I would ALWAYS go via Rouen and the A28 - it's a much more relaxing drive than going via Paris.   The peripherique can be very busy and frantic - it's certainly not a relaxing drive.

As a truckdriver who uses this route often I would say go Paris and either the A86 off peak or use the A104 peak. The Rouen route is 70 miles longer and cheaper on toll but very very hilly so you will use a lot more fuel and time than the Paris route.
