Hi All,

I am sure that someone here can explain how the Swiss motorway tax works for a tag axel motorhome that is over 3500tonnes.  Also I have heard mention of a "go box" or is this only for another country, I thought that as we were only driving through (all in one day) that a go box may be cheaper.

We will be entering Swiss at Basel on Wednesday 22nd July at noon, I have to buy a vignette, but my friend has the tag axel, should we expect of a delay in getting these?

Many thanks

A go box is used for lgv trucks to pay tolls in Austria only. It only applies to comercial traffic. At the border in Basle will be a couple of border gaurds who will sell you a vignette, I dont know if the tag axle makes a difference sorry.

.

You have to buy Swiss Vignettes for your category of vehicle - simple. Sadly since the Swiss have joined Schengen this will indeed be from a border 'guard' not the traditional Swiss customs man.

TOTALLY INCORRECT (well sort of).
The Austrian Go-Box is needed for ANY vehicle over 3.5tonnes whether it be bus, hgv or motorhome. See here.Go Box website.
Now to original question,
Viginette no problem at Basle or any border as you go through if you have no viginette they just pull you to one side and sell you one.

For the motorhome I assume this will work in the same way as hgv's and buses etc. It is a bit fiddly but nothing major the first time is the worst due to the admin involved.
1- Take paperwork (LOG BOOK)for vehicle into the office.

2- They will give an ID card for the vehicle.

3- You put ID card or number with mileage into it and get reciept.

4- You go on your merry way to destination or other border.

5- At other border (or before leaving Swiss)you put ID card or number and mileage into machine and pay up.

I could be wrong but that is how it works for hgv's and buses.
Just remember vehicles 7.5t and over are banned from running between 10pm and 4am in Switzerland without the correct permits.
