We are off to France at the end of July and staying a week at Les Portes du Beaujolais (Anse, north of Lyon) and a further week at Camping L'ideal (Lake Annecy)..and very excited we are too !!

We will be stopping o/n en route and on the way back to break up the journey.

Towing a trailer containing all our worldly goods (with bikes atop) we have decided not to stop o/n in one of the motels - fearing trailer and all may not be there next morning - and plumbed for throwing the pup tent in the back of the car and finding a site roughly half way...hence the question.

A quick calculation puts Troyes roughly half way between Calais and Lyon, if heading north east of Paris and down.

Can anyone recommend a site that is in this vicinity for a stopover ? The only stipulation is that it must have 'proper toilets'...any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks

Bryan

There's a municipal site in Troyes itself, which is fine for an overnight stop.  There are also lots of sites around the Lac D'Orient alongside the lake, if you want something out of town.  Further south from Troyes is Chatillon sur Seine, and there's another muncipal site there, set at the top of the town, with a nice walk down through the woods into the town itself.

Can't recommend a specific campsite, but would definitely recommend the slight detour to the Lac D'Orient. Fabulous lake beach with free parking picnic area, showers etc. Great for an early morning dip before continuing your journey.

Troyes municipal is fine, stopped one night on our way home last week. They are building a pool so the little bar/cafe is shut. Otherwise fine. There is a pizza shop opposite and restauarants within walking distance.

We have stayed at a site in Arcis Sur Aube a few times (just North of Troyes). It is a good little site. Very friendly and easy walking into village for Bread, Restaurants etc. There is a smallish supermarket so if first night stop we can stock up on wine, beer etc.
