Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
We holidayed near that area this year and drove from near Trier to Bernkastel-Kues, to lovely places to visit. We followed the path of the Mosel and went through several villages en route and passed several smaller type sites. I cant say what they were like or what facilities they had but there seemed to be several. There was a one at the town of Neumagen which was right alongside the river.
Many camp sites along the Mosel, as with the Rhine gorge get very busy in peak summer and units can end up quite closely packed together. Last time I passed by Bullay the camp site looked full to bursting (a big contrast to when I stayed there with my parents in 1971 when it was a lovely open field with about 10 units) - ah those were the days!
We used to use a site at Valvig, on the river, just 3 miles east from Cochem (yes I know very slightly the wrong way). Very nice. Not at a lot particularly going on for 16 year olds. Imbissstube (fastish food)served from a van of an evening. But really nice location and village.
I only comment as not only is it tremendously handy for Cochem, but we were there in the last week in August once eons ago and it was the grape/wine harvest festival* A very sleepy place turned into the middle-aged oompah band (followed by 16 year old friendly disco type music) party capital in hours and much fun was had by all ages.
The next day was back to normal. Silence at 9pm!

* Held about 6 weeks early, but they had to catch the tourist season

Hi Lyn i dont know what you are camping in but we went to Baren in Bullay only last week but unfortunately the pitch was very gritty and stony and i was not prepared to put my tent on it. there were some full grass pitches near the entance but we were not offered these, also the electric is on a meter which i think can work out quite costly. it was right on the mosel though in a pretty town if your in a van im sure it would be fine.
we ended up at a campsite in dockweiller i think it was called and was about 30km from cochem, it was lovely and green and great for pitching our orchy however.... there were no doors on the showers and i wasnt into that at all!!!! lol
cochem was lovely though we had a nice day there it was very busy though but there are loads of eating places and bars, put good shoes on it was very 'cobbly'
------------- A tent is like a newborn born baby..... to some they all look the same..... but if its yours it's beautiful.

Lynne, I live about 1hrs drive from the Mosel, and when I was a young man, we just used to drive down through the towns and villages looking for the local winefest..then just go to the nearest campsite and slam the tent up before hitting the town...ohh to be young again
TBH I can't give you any recommendations but I would just ensure that you book up at one of the larger campsites near one of the larger towns..more options for yourselves and your children to do things....all large German campsites are normally in good condition and clean etc(hope you don't find the exception)...remember tourism is 90% of that areas income per year.
Thanks everyone for your help still surfing the net to get a good campsite, although getting fed up with looking now
still must plod on and find one going in 4 weeks time.
