I'm with Val and use a plastic holder for a filter. I make it into the flask to keep it warm for a little later in the morning.

I have one of these stainless steel coffee filters at home, and intend to take it camping.

You simpley place the filter on top of the cup with the coffee inside and pour on hot water, the coffee drips through.

We also use the cheap plastic filters with filter papers in, you then just bin the filter paper and grounds. I don't really like the taste of cafetiere coffee and I HATE washing them up, a cheap filter (easily available in France) is much easier. I'd stick to the smaller sized filers, I found the bigger ones tended to clog a bit and took ages to filter through.
We also use an old fashioned coffee perculator that goes on the stove top, we have a Coleman one, another big stainless steel one and a small retro one that came from a car boot sale. I love the noise and smell of coffee percolating on the stove
edited to add, pavement cafes are lovely but they don't tend to me next to my tent at 7am!

We either used the plastic filter (and a filter paper) or the cafetiere. It all depends on who is making it and how much we want. We take a grinder too and buy the beans in France. We got 1kg of Auchan own brand for €3.5 last year. Very nice it was too.
Some campsites will let you buy cups of coffee and take them back to the tent. I'm thinking of the Municipal in Savigny les Beaune, but I'm sure I've done it elsewhere too.

I've seen a lot of people camping abroad doing this. Some Dutch people we camped next to put the plastic filter straight on top of the flask ready to take out for the day.
I've copied them at home. I make a cafetiere then decant it into a flask to keep hot, it also stops it from tasting stewed.
Tip for cafetiere coffee is to do lots of stirring so you get a good flavour.

Hubster puts the filter straight on top of the flask too, but I'm too clumsy for that

thanks folks ..... by chance went via MILs last weekend and found an old plastic coffee filter in the garage and a box of 100 paper filters .... so we're all set up!
I like the idea of popping it in a flask to keep it warm!
