Good evening campers,

I would love to spend 4 or 5 nights in Paris this summer, and am hoping to save money by camping, does anyone have any tales of a similar trips, recommendations on travel, campsites, routes to Paris?

Want to keep travel and accomodation costs to an absolute minimum so i can spend money sightseeing.

I look forward to hearing from you............

There are at least two sites in Paris within easy travel distance of the main attractions, these are Camping Bois de Boulogne and Camping International Maisons Laffitte.

With regards to a route just get off the ferry at Calais and follow the signs for Paris, you can't miss it.20

You may find that by the time you've paid for a pitch and electricity, and carried all your camping gear, that you're actually better in a budget hotel somewhere on the outskirts of Paris, directly adjacent to a train station to get a quick ride into Paris.

Either that or book a hotel during the three weeks in late July/early August when most Parisiens are away on holiday, and you may well get a real bargain.

My son and his girlfriend stayed in the equivalent of a Premiere Inn in Montmartre (OK, adjacent to the Red Light District, but they're young and didn't mind) and had a real bargain holiday.  They also found a restaurant which did 'eat all you can - steaks' for 10 euros.

We've stayed at Maisons Laffite several times, but the last time just found it rather grotty, and the toilets and showers weren't clean and left a lot to be desired.

We have stayed at Maison Laffite and found it really good for getting into central Paris, about 20 mins on RER. Agree with Val its not one of the most elite campsites we have stayed, but we were in   a Eurocamp mobile so did not have to use the facilities.  In fact we stayed there for 4 nights and thats exactly what we did, only used it for staying in at night.  We did sight seeing all day and just returned to sleep have breakfast and then off again.  If that it all you want to do then it is a great campsite. for its location on getting into central Paris   Also Maison Lafitte is a lovely place as well.

We stayed at Ibis Montmarte and thought it was brilliant, except for parking, which was in the local peugeot dealers showroom

The best way to Paris is by Eurostar but by coach is cheaper.

I've heard good and bad things about camp sites - not too sure whether I'd go if I needed my sleep.

We've usually stayed at Youth Hostels http://www.hihostels.com/web/index.en.htm?linkid=980019&linksubid=hi although you would need to join YHA if not already a member.  On the other hand, we have had incredibly cheap hotels at this time of year - all the French people are on holiday outside of Paris so plenty of empty rooms! We usually book through Octopus -    http://www1.octopustravel.com/searchHome.form?brandCode=LON_OTUK01_ONL&country=gb&languageCode=en&currency=gbp&WT.srch=1&WT.mc_id=GBPPCGOOGBRAND&bbcid=2549 - but one of the chainscould be okay.

.

I once camped in Paris Sud campsite and our tent was robbed one day during the day. The next day our (may mate's) car was robbed whilst I had my head about 1 foot into the front entrance of our tent. As I was camping with a mate I heard a sound but assumed it was him delving onto his car.

I agree you can stay in a French 'box' type hotel *

However, I would suggest an alternative. Camp in 'real' France and commute! Paris is much smaller than London so 'real' France is closer to central Paris than you think.

The trick is to stay inside the outermost fare zone of the Ile de France greater Paris transport ticket, 'Mobilis'.

For example you could camp at Rambouillet, and commute in by train.

You can buy a Mobilis rover ticket in Rambouillet which covers the 25-30 minute train into Paris, and then becomes a day ticket valid with Paris for the whole day, then it is valid for the return to Rambouillet.

I have had a day in Paris before from as far out as Blois

On most train routes out of Paris, 30 minutes will take you well into 'real' rural France.

You can enjoy the best of Paris , but return to a more relaxed country town to sleep (and indeed eat).

* - (BTW I was amused by the 'Premier Inn type' reference as its the other way round, the Premier Inn type hotel is modelled on the French invention of this type of hotel (ETAP, Ibis, MIster Bed etc)
