We've had that too - at La Croix Valmer and Cavalaire, where I spent six weeks one late summer.  After a storm, with wind blowing in from the sea, and then a change of wind direction blowing out to sea, the sea went really cold.  The friend I was staying with said it happens infrequently when the colder, deeper water is brought nearer to the surface, and the warmer water on the beach is 'blown out to sea' to be replaced with this colder water.

This year, at Agde, although the sea temperature was mostly lovely (feeling cold at first, but soon warming up) occasionally there would be a really cold current in amongst the warmer water,  which made your legs tingle!  Others noticed this too.

We were at our mobile in Frejus last week and went down to St Aygylf beach,it was bloody icy cold,ive never experienced that before at all,maybe we have just been lucky.It was far too cold to swim.Yet the week before as you said it was luke warm.

Hoping that its a bit warmer when we go back in September.
