Hi Jason. What a great thread. We are forward-planning for our trip away next year. This thread has given us some inspiration, although we plan to backpack our way around Europe! Let's hope you have a great time!

We went to the Auvergne this year and to be honest were a bit disappointed. It was cold and wet quite a bit, and the thunderstorms were of biblical proportions. There also seemed to be more than the fair share of travellers. For newbies ? I would think twice to ne honest. The region I always recommend to first timers in France is the Loire - lots to do, easy to get to and tends to get good weather. But after that, who knows ?

One tip I would give you - take a listing of the B&B and Formule 1 hotel chains (or pop into one of them when you get there to get a brochure). For 65 Euro per night for a family room of 4 (B&B), they could be a life saver if you need to get a roof over your head quickly.

Hi all,

Thought I'd give you all a quick update and thank you all for your input!

We are all booked up now and leave on Monday. We struggled to find campsites etc on line and do all the planning so in the end got my wife to ring KeyCamp and boy were they fantastic!!! Told them what we wanted to do and approximate route and they went away and came back with a plan. So now we are not camping but staying in 3 bed static caravans (good for sleeping and facilities!) on Keycamp sites for the whole trip. This means we don't have to take any camping gear with us and can just load the car with stuff that costs us a lot over in europe and keep costs down.

More importantly they said as long as we do less than 7 days in each site they would do us a great deal. And they weren't kidding - they knocked 60% off the price! We have 22 nights in 3 bed caravans on great sites on the route we wanted for under £1500 including eurotunnels - unbelievable! It seems that they really can only sell the 7 day packages so late now and will give these filler days away quite cheap! So pleased.

So its

2 nights Chateau Des Marais - Chambourd (Loire)

4 nights La Polombiere - Sarlat (Dordogne)

2 nights Carcassonne/Bezier - i need to sort this still!

5 nights Domaine Du Colombier (St Raphael)

6 nights Europa Silvella (Lake Garda)

2 nights La Pergola (Lac De Chalain)

4 nights La Croix Du Vieux (Paris)

We have bought a lot of camping equiptment but I'm sure we will use it next year and onwards for shorter breaks if we enjoy this.

Looking forward to it now as the weather here is SHOCKING!!!

Just need to organise breakdown cover now, hotel/caravan accomodation at Carcassonne area, a few cheap stop over hotels...and probably other things I've forgotten!
