Christine, perhaps the biggest problem is that you're trying to combine the use of Camping Cheques and finding a busy site with plenty going on still. The idea behind Camping Cheques is that they're for use when the site is NOT busy, and needs to fill pitches by discounting them. This inevitably means that the sites you'll be restricted to will be those where the activities are at least 'counting down' to closing towards the end of August. I would think there will be some sites where this doesn't apply, but perhaps they'll be few and far between. L'Oree du Bois does sound like it's running on full steam - so perhaps this is one of those sites.
I'd agree with your OH about the Canvas/Eurocamp type sites - but even they (we've found) tend to become quieter for the very last week in August - certainly in the areas we've been to at that time, even when our sons were small. At one site at the August bank holiday the site virtually emptied.
I know Bois de Bardelet does lots of activities in high season, but I think you'll find even there that at the end of August things are closing/have closed. I know when we've done overnights on our way to and from the south, the shop has been on reduced hours, and one of the toilet blocks has been closed.
