I'm going from Calais to Beziers, anyone know the cost of tolls, is it worth me trying to avoid them, or do the toll charges vary depending on the route

camp outside,

If you go to a route planner, like viamichelin, you can specify a route that includes toll roads. This will tell you how long the journey will take, how much the tolls would be and even roughly how much fuel you will use on the journey.

Head for Rouen via the motorways and then Orleans via the N154, pick up the A71 and then the A75.

We came back that way last week and it did not cost a fortune as the A75 apart from being very scenic is free, except for the Millau bridge section which is around 8 euros.

If you have time overnight in Millau as this will avoid you paying the toll, it's also a nice town to lok around.

Agree fully with 'Mike & Co', but would add that Mike didn't underline that the A16 Calais - Boulogne, A28 Abbeville - Rouen are free as well as the A75.

On ViaMichelin, choosing options 'favour motorways' and 'avoid tolls' throws up an interesting variation which is A16/A28 via Rouen to Nonancourt, then N12 to the outskirts of Paris, then A77/N7 (part free motorway) and N7/N9 to Clermont Ferrand ot pick up the A75. On certain sections of the A77/N7 axis you have the choice to use the free old road or paid motorway section depending on how you feel at the time.  Many of the non-motorway sections (including the N9 (D2009 now I think - ugh!) part are quite straight and well built roads
