Thinking of going to La Rochell area on the 25 July for 2 weeks but have not booked campsite, any suggestions of a nice campsite and will the weather be better there than South Brittany. Has anyone towed a caravan to there and how long did it take.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

I've just got back from the Royan area which is south of La Rochelle.
With stops it took me 8 hours to drive from Caen to Royan so I reckon you could knock off about an hour and half for the shorter distance to La Rochelle. It doesn't look far on the maps but reckon on around 250-275 miles.
From Caen you can either go via Rennes and Nantes which is dead easy or you can go due south from Caen via Falaise, Argentan, Alencon, Le Mans, Angers, Cholet and then following signs to La Rochelle. This second route is mainly Peage (tolls) and cost me something to the order of €38.00 one way towing my caravan. I came home this way and it was no quicker that the other route which only cost €9.70 for the bit of autoroute from Nantes south to where you turn off at junction 7 to head for La Rochelle.
Also the road between Caen and Alencon leaves a great deal to be desired. A new dual carriageway is being built and the existing road is being left to go to hell in a basket!
Go via Rennes and Nantes, save yourself shedloads of dosh
in tolls and don't listen to all the stories about getting lost in Nantes. Keep your cool, know your route and junction numbers and you'll be fine. Everything is clearly signposted and IMHO, you'd have to work at getting yourself lost!
Sorry but can't help with campsites but I hope this route advice helps. The info is only four weeks old.
In June the weather in the Royan area was fantastic. Never had any rain, only three cloudy mornings which by lunchtime had cleared away and temps. in the high 20's to low 30's all the time.
Agree with Vic regarding the route. Depending on the ferry you catch, you can stay overnight on several sites a few miles from the port which cater for the later ferry.
I would recommend this site for planning your route
Its euro school hols all of july and 1st 2 weeks of august, so you had better check on space or you might not get in, mind you its nice place and flat, great for bikes. hope that helps.
