We are spending the first week of our hols on the med (hopefully in glorious sunshine!).We are considering a campsite on Lac de Pareloup for the second week but have read reviews of cold nights. My question is how cold is cold ? Can anyone help? Does it mean a jumper after sundown or several jumpers !!
We will be there for the last week of August. Many thanks in advance.

One jumper, but only some nights.  Sometimes it's very warm indeed.  We've been there in late August, and near Nant (Aveyron, too, but the west side) we had a frost one night - but that's very rare.  In mid-September 2007 it was so hot that it didn't really cool down even at night.  In May 2008 it was very hot, too.

We have been to Aveyron (Val de Cantobre) in June eight or nine times in a tent, and yes the nights do get chilly, but you have a brilliant sleep.   We have always taken a mid season duvet and have never felt too warm.  With regards to the evenings, when the sun has sunk you would probably need a light fleece, jeans or jogging bottoms, and a couple of bottles of wine, followed by a good glass of Cognac.

The nights in this area are magical, there are so many stars you can hardly see the sky and it almost has a frost like feel, but absolutely wonderful.  We have have some of the best holidays ever in this area, and somehow the fresh chilly feel seems to enlighten it somehow.

Have a great holiday

Jill

We went to a site called Les Tours in the Aveyron a few years ago and I have to say the nights were very cold and in the mornings we had to warm up the Eurocamp tent by putting the gas cooker on. I think it was a particularly bad year weather wise (August 2004) but I would take good thick jumper and jeans with you just in case.

Having stayed at this fab site myself a few times I couldn't agree more!!! Definitely recommend the cognac and the star gazing....

I know Val A has very fond memories too.

Have a wonderful time in an incredibly beautiful region of France.

Thanks for all your reassuring replies. The site we are considering is Le Caussanel but have also looked at Les Tours - both are very resonable for a family of 6 during that week. We look forward to both the cognac and the stars.......anymore info on either site will be much appreiciated. Thanks again x

Hi Mum of 4,

Despite the fact we had truly awful weather for our holiday at Les Tours (August 2004 and I think most of France had awful weather at the time) it is a lovely site in the most beautiful setting. If you had good weather you really couldn't ask for more. The pools and restaurants are right by the lake and the pitches are spread out on terraces along the lake side. The only downside for us was that it is a very long way from anywhere, including a decent supermarket, and the site shop at the time was fairly limited. Fortunately we had several other families with us otherwise it would have been very difficult to entertain three small children in such continual rain. If you do venture to Les Tours I hope you have wall to wall sunshine.

Susie

I've been watching this with interest as the jet stream over northern Europe isn't really helping my Brittany dreams.....so odds on we'll now be in Aveyron for a few days, before Spain.

For every 150m above sea level the temperature drops by 1C (assuming everything else is constant). The Lac de Pareloup is broadly 700m above sea level, so in general a 5C drop compared with sea level.

I'll be taking two fleeces to sit out of an evening just in case.

I can recall being in Andorra (higher up but further south) in late August and sunny 28C during the day....and then thunderstorms in the evening ....then -5C overnight.

I know it was -5C because the bottom of my sleeping bag was encased in ice.....Because "some pillock" had washed pine resin off the tent in Spain with soapy water and hadn't "bothered" to tell his future wife that the tent was now going to leak.

As said, I do have fond memories of Val de Cantobre.  We used to go there a lot, sometimes only for a night or two, sometimes for two weeks, when my sons were smaller.  One magic night (very cold) the sky was just 'full of stars', as previously mentioned, and frost crystals were 'dancing' in columns on the terraces of the site with an almost 'rainbow' effect as the column moved.  It was the most amazing thing.  I got both sons up to see it, and we sat out watching for a while.

There are glow worms there too, in the terraces long grass, and around the garden wall just in front of the larger toilet block.  Wild boar too, on the Larzac plateau as you cross from La Cavalerie.  The pizzeria used to do eat-in on informal tables, at take-away prices, and we won the bar quiz night on several occasions!!!  When Clare and Francois had the site, it was like going home to old friends.  We haven't been back since they sold the site, but it still keeps calling us back again.  We were there on the penultimate night the year the site closed under their ownership for the last time, and there were tears all around when Clare hinted to us that they were selling up.

The views from the site are absolutely beautiful and the light changes and throws new views, and new aspects, with the changing sun or moon.  Mind you, it can't half rain there too - we had one year when the rain was just torrential, and we left earlier than planned and went down to the Med where the weather was lovely.  In fact, I think that may have been the start of our 'following the best weather'.
