Hello everyone.. we (wife kids & me) are travelling to dordogne (sarlet) on sunday 9th August.. we have our campsites booked  for the 10th so am looking for 1 nights stop over on the sunday night . from what i have read on this forum the best route looks like calais rouen chartres orleans..

we are towing a caravan

we have 9.30am sailing from dover so that puts us at midday landing in calais?.. can any suggestions for our route and stop over locations we were thinking Chartres is do able  .. i guess it would be great if site had eating facilities or resturants nearby??

kind regards

Andy

Hi Andy

Route suggested is good but take care going through Rouen.  It is usually very busy.

Last year I stayed at the Municiple Camping at Chatres which is basic but convenient. At the time they only took cash but it was inexpensive.

You might be ok through Rouen as it is a Sunday.
Have you used the Viamichelin website for route planning? It is very good, out of interest I input departure as Calais, and arrival Chartres. It gave me options for each town, not knowing the postcodes for ferry terminal in Calais, or campsite in Chartres, I juct clicked on 'Gare' for each town (=station), just to get an idea.
Anyway, if you look HERE you'll find a route description, plus a map, so you can work out distances etc, and it also tells you the roadsigns to look out for through Rouen.
I say 'through' Rouen, in reality you don't actually drive through the centre of it at all, very basically speaking now, you come off the A28 at the end, turn left as it were, drive along a long road with a lot of traffic lights on it, turn right and you are out of it.
Hope the link is of use to you, I find it very useful.

Thanks  for the replys...

Navigating Rouen should not be a problem as i often go to le mans 24hr race.   sat nav seems to work well round there...

the viamichelin link is great.. i can use that to make sure my sat nav has the correct route... thanks for the link..

regarding the stop over this is the only one i could find is this the municipal one.. are there any others on this route that are recommended.. we dont have to stop in chartres it just looked about the right distance..

kind regards

Andy

There is a campsite between Evreux and Dreux, nearer to Dreux, at St Remy sur Avre: CAMPING DU PRE DE L’EGLISE.
We've stayed there once a couple of years ago, and found it to be very good, I think we paid just under 9 Euro, 2 of us, no EHU. Seems to be a popular overnighter, toiletblock a bit dated, but very, very clean. Hot water for washing and washing up very, very hot!!
Link to site, only in French, but I'm sure you can manage to read the relevant and important bits!

Stayed at Chartres municipal last year, good clean site, better than some commercial ones I've stayed at!

We landed at 7am off the train, I think we made Chartres for about 5pm, and that was with many stops inc one for grilling some bacon!!! remember that they will start filling up from around 4pm.

If you have tomtom and want POI's that show 100's of campsites inc the Chartres one (I think as I navigated to it last year!) I'm sharing mine with whoever wants it, its available as a free download here;  http://www.kitchenfoods.co.uk/forum/tomtom-satnav-pois-t-28.html it also includes UK McDonalds, Tescos etc etc!!

Camping Municipal Morancez is a good option.

Just of the Chartres by pass to the south. You won't need to enter Chartres at all unless you want to.
