Hellos all,

Off to France on Sunday-driven there before but not with caravan.

1-Do i remove extension mirrors whilst on ferry?

2-Any problems boarding with a blade type stabiliser.

3-Any petrol stations near the port in Portsmouth or Ouistrem (Caen) as I'd like to start the journey with a fullish tank.

Regards

Steve

Steve will try and answer your questions,

1. Depends which Ferry company your sailing with, some pack you in tighter than others, but rule of thumb is no. If your concerned just angle your mirrors in.

2. Never seen any probs with blade stabilisers, and plenty must use them. if you have any doubts just take your time. Usually one of the deck crew will watch you over the ramp, and let you know if there is any problems.

3. If you carry on past the exit off the M275 which is signposted for the ferries, down to the next roundabout. Go round the roundabout (its traffic light controlled)  and come back on yourself (so your facing out of Portsmouth) theres a Shell petrol station on the left-if memory serves me right its reasonably priced. when youve refueled just carry on down the road for about 100M and your at the roundabout thats the entrance to the ferry port.

4. I think Caen has a couple of petrol stations on the road out to the Autoroutes, but it has been a few years since i last went through there.

Hope this helps you.

A lot of petrol stations will be closed on Sunday so it might be better filling up in G.B.

In terms of extension mirrors, I would at least fold them in once loaded. Some folks are not adverse to accidentally knocking them off with bags, children and the like when they rush on or off the car deck. As mac says depends how much they cram you in. We had ours knocked to the floor once before we had got the car doors open. When challenged the knocker just shrugged and walked away.

As you come out of the port heading towards the autoroute there is an ESSO self serve garage on your right about 5 mins from port, and it does take UK cards.
