Next year, august 2010 we plan on going to parts of Eastern Europe during our annual European tour.

We will have three weeks in total and will be covering; Cherbourg, Paris, Strasbourg, where the kids want to visit Europa Land. Then it’s on to Munich and after that Vienna, Bratislava, Oświęcim [the Polish town where Auschwitz concentration camp is near], then we’ll continue on to Poznan where we’ll be meeting a friend of mine before going to Berlin. After Berlin we’ll be making our way to Liege to see some more friends before finally working our way back to Cherbourg for the boat back to Ireland.

I am looking for any camping advice you may have on places like Strasburg, Munich, Vienna, Oświęcim, Poznan or Berlin.

Yes, it’s a bit early and a lot to ask but I thought I get the info now rather than wait until too close to the off date.

Any advice would be appreciated.

We've stayed in Munich a few times, as we have a friend who lives near there. The campsite we've used, because it was the one nearest, is Munchen-Obermenzing. The site is ok, quite near the Autobahn, but you can hear it. There are 2 others in the vicinity of Munich, and I'm sure somebody here will have stayed on them at some point: Munchen-Thalkirchen and Campingplatz am Langwieder See.
We have also stayed in Vienna, Camping Wien-Sud. A very nice site, with bus stop outside the site, there is a supermarket adjacent to the site though, although we didn't hear too much noise, as we stayed over a weekend. Also we stayed outside Vienna, at Klosterneuburg, Donaupark Camping Klosterneuburg. That is a Camping Cheques site, it's about 25 km out of Vienna, but right near the Danube, and the site arranges a bus into Vienna, about 9.30 am going in, and from memory, 5.00 pm coming back. That is a nice site too.
Can't help you with Poland, it's somewhere we've thought of going too. Same as Berlin, we may be going there in December though, when we are going to the Xmas markets in Germany.

For Auschwitz, try camping near Krakow - one of the loveliest cities on the planet. Then go to Auschwitz on an organised trip (dirt cheap) you will get more out of it. Apparently there is talk of closing Auschwitz - money. I went there a few years ago with OH. We wept like babies and it was months before I could talk about it. There is an age limit, I think its 15 and above.

This is a handy site for Europa Land http://www.laue-camp.de/zentrale_dateien/frameset_engl/frameset_engl.html Its in Germany near to the A5 autobahn. Stayed there last year and its a nice site. For Berlin we stayed here http://www.camping-potsdam.de/ which is near Potsdam and within cycling distance of the Sanssouci Royal Gardens in Potsdam. The site also run a free minibus service to the nearest tramstop which you take into Potsdam and then the train in the the very impressive Haupt Bahnfof in Berlin. I have put reviews of both these campsite on here.

Forgot to say: near Munich there is also Dachau. We visited it after a few days in Munich, as we weren't sure we wanted to. In the end we decided to go, and our reaction was much like alan29.
There are no words to describe the feelings you have when you go round those camps. I say those camps, but it is, up to now, the only one we have been to.
Auschwitz is somewhere we have thought about visiting, perhaps we should go before they close it.

I spotted a couple of campsites inbetween Krakow and Auschwitz but thought they looked a bit grim and uninviting !!

There could be a better site near Krakow that i didn't see but i don't think there is anything too near Auschwitz.

Dave.

we camped at Krakow. We also stayed near Auschwitz at a youth centre which accepts campers - don't know if it is still open.

IMHO I dont think you have to go on an organised tour to the Auschwitz sites. The sites speak for themselves and taking things at your own pace and doing yout own thinking is better.
