I have a dilema......we are booked on the ferry next week to go to france but i have managed to get an extra day off work17

Do i just turn up at dover 24 hours early and play stupid and hope that they will let us on with no surcharge or notify them by phone and risk getting charged £50 for swapping the booking and bringing it forward by 24 hours??

Your thoughts please

Thanks

Bats (just trying to save some money)

Hi, we've just had to do the opposite coming home but delaying our ferry. So, our tale might help...

Original booking was 9.00 at night, but needed to delay as we;d broken down near Abbeville. When my sister rang for us she was told we could pay £65 for the 10.30 or 11.00 ish one, or just £10 for 00.30... so she booked us on that. We didn't make that either so turned up on spec and got onto the 3.20 a.m. for no additional fee (bar the £10 already paid for the guaranteed place on the 00.30).

Obviously the companies want to fill all the ferries and stop the turning up on spec. I'd give then an anonymous call as David has said?

The chances are you will be charged the extra at check in anyway. Only used P&O once and turned up 4 hours early as we always do when we travel with Norfolk Line. P&O wanted £40 to put us on the next ferry. We didnt want to pay the extra so had to leave the dock entirely and park up on Marine Drive for a couple of hours.

You're going to be on the ferry at one of the busiest times of the year and would only have a slim chance of getting moved to an earlier slot on the day of the crossing. the chances of getting on a crossing 24 hours earlier without charge is highly remote. I'd pay the £50 surcharge or stay at a uk site for a night.

I changed from a Friday morning to a Thursday evening, back in June, and they charged me £30.

Not unheard of at all - we changed our booking last year and the new one was cheaper they were really apologetic that they couldn't refund the difference because we had paid in Tesco vouchers - I said I was happy just not to be charged and admin fee - but no, they insisted that we accept upgrades to the value of the difference - so we had priority boarding.

I think P&O are great...

Blimey, you don't hear many people say that about P&O!

I know... but tbh we have *touch wood* never had any problems - ferrys have run spot on time, always been allowed on early/late with no fee whatsoever, changed the times, changed the car details never been charged.   They don't charge extra for the height/length, and they run loads of ferrys so no stress if you miss one.

The only thing I am not chuffed about is losing the Tesco voucher scheme.

Well, i feel i must speak up in defence of P+O, last year we turned up at Hull to go to Zebrugge a whole day late, we only discovered this at the gates ( i know , what an arse ) however, they were unable to get us on that days ferry to Zebrugge but offered us the later sailing at 21.00 to Rotterdam which i accepted, i went to pay for the change but they didn't take anything off me, the staff couldn't have been more helpful and saved our holiday.

We came home on wednesday, from france, with P&O. Our original booking was for 4.30pm but we were there very early. We asked if we could get on early and were offered an immediate ferry for an extra £60 (car + trailer) or come back a while later for no extra charge. We had a total of 2.5 hours to wait around but we were happy with the service as we were still across the channel earlier than we expected to be

Hope this helps someone

Untill last year we used P&O for at least 20 years ( also as Townsend Thoresen) with never a problem, regularly needed an earlier/later ferry and we were never charged a penny and we were given refunds on a few occasions.  Last two years we've used Norfolkline - nice boats and cheap fares and no charging for alterations made.
