It was very busy at full capacity i think..we needed earplugs for a good nights sleep :o

Oh no i had only read good reviews about this site, not happy to hear it is noisy at night!!

Blinky  We have been to cote de Nacre twice and seen people  in the pool in shorts, however it does say that they are not allowed. I wear  trunks that cover my bum( big, uns) rather than speedos, because I don't want my bum cheeks to get sunburnt( OH refuses to rub on sun tan lotion there).

Some campsites insist that you wear swim caps.

Probably too late now with this reply! But here goes.

We have been on campsites in France annually for the past 20 years, and it really does vary from site to site....and like the French from lifeguard to lifeguard...or hell just from hour to hour!!

One minute you MUST wear speedo style next it's ok to wear shorts......so we always have a pair packed "just in case".Having been caught out once and all having to trail to Decathalon to buy trunks.

It is to do with hygeine and keeping "Your Pool" clean and fresh. After a long discussion with French lifeguard, I now agree with him.....as if you wear the swimshorts with pockets, things tend to be put in them like sweet, papers coins, cigarette ends, all of which can fall out in the pool and clog the filters. Plus they tend to be worn for most of the day, either before arriving at pool or afterwards....so getting sweaty and.....well you get the drift!  You certainly wouldnt wear your speedos to go shopping at Carrefour!!

It doesnt matter what style...so long as no pockets. Our teenage sons compromised on a pair of surfing trunks similar to cycling shorts.

Hope this helped.

Here at Le Soleil in Argeles it seems anything goes

My observation is that swimwear gets smaller as you get older until it finally disappears all together [on the beach]

17  Yes, we have noticed that too!!! accidentally straying too far along some of the beaches can give you a nasty surprise!!

And why is it nearly always only old people (not being ageist, as we close now ourselves) that are on these beaches? and not the lithe, toned, young things that one might prefer to stumble across lol! 17

It's 'cos us oldies are 'body-confident' enough to dispense with clothes altogether!    You only have to read some of the postings on these forums to realise how many people have real hang-ups about their bodies - for example speedos seem to cause 'mirth and embarrassment' (see the post on the Life..... forum re Alton Towers banning them) - WHY???

I think my OH looks fantastic in his speedos - and also fantastic without them!  He thinks the same about me (though I don't wear speedos, but you know what I mean) - and as we only care about what each other thinks, and not everyone else, we're happy 'in our own skin'!   We're still 'toned' and 'lithe' and not at all wrinkly.  I could post a photo (without any 'nasty surprises?????!!!!!' - it's been edited to cover up any nasty bits!!) - but I'm not sure you'd all be ready for it!!!!

We did the naturist beach and naturist campsite this year for the first time - having wanted to do for ages - and it's certainly an experience I would recommend to anyone, old or not!!!!

Me too!
Unfortunately it seems younger people have far more "hang ups" than older people, that's something to do with "body image" and needing to look good and "cool", whatever that means.
They also tend to think that their body is far from perfect, which of course it is, but that's what comes from having role models who are fashion models and footballers!
I have seen literally thousands of naked bodies over the years and only seen 2 that were anywhere near perfect, but of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Just to throw another chestnut on the fire.....

Have you all heard about the "Burkini" story in the French press this week?
Read on: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8197917.stm

And the poll about whether speedos should be banned from British beaches at Handbag.com

Interesting to think the French are thinking in terms of hygiene and equality and we're thinking in terms of aesthetics.

I know which I prefer (and after 5 years on thesee boards so do you, probably!)

I read that too - and thought perhaps Alton Towers should start selling the burkini - to cover embarrassment and any possible body hair apart from the eyebrows!  Perhaps the 'speedo banners' should demonstrate the aesthetic qualities of the burkini, too!

Indeed. You're very right. I don't mind either way and am certainly not afraid to get my kit off in public. I'm right up there with the Europeans on that one. Once you've had IVF a couple of times, like me, you don't have any embarrassment left.

Though I did once get roundly told off by a female NHS doctor for saying that! She was trying to examine me under a blanket at the time, which seemed a bit stupid. She thought the Europeans were outrageous and we ought to have even more modesty in this country than we already do. I'm guessing she may have had religious views.

The one thing that does bother me with speedos is when I was younger and cuter I'd be in the water leaning on the side and some adult would choose to stand directly above me in his speedos, hands on hips and do knee bends. You still see that but these days I'm not on the receiving end thankfully. Not everyone by any means, but when they do that it's intentional.

It seems to be the fashion this year for shorts wearers to go bathing with their pants under their shorts.  I noticed it and my son asked me what it was all about.  I have no idea - unless it saves people washing their pants

speedos seem to be very unpopular at Plage Nord at Argeles

- but so do all other costumes too

My son says it's fashion and the French kids have been doing it for a couple of years. I think it might be because they all have to show their pants over the top of their jeans.

It's pretty gross though when you think about it.
