After being sorely disappointed with our beach campsite booking we're searching for something lovely for next year.
I'd like a site in lower Brittany or the Vendee which is peaceul and not too large. I'm not bothered about fabulous pools or evening entertainment but decent toilets etc and a beach close by are a must.
Oh, and I'd like a site where you're not all squashed together with only a foot or so between non deliniated pitches... I'd like to be able to cook and eat outside the tent without a 360 degree view of other tents/motorhomes/caravans/cars.
Too much to ask? Anyone got some good recommendations?
And am I mad to be planning next year's holiday already?

oh dear, where did you go? I can highly recommend this site at La Foret in Brittany www.camping-les-saules.com/
and at la Trinite sur mer you cant go wrong with camping de la palage or camping de la baie
In my experience a nice site very near the beach in the vendee dosent exist (avoid St Jean de Monts imho) but I have heard good things about Camping Bel at La Trance sur mer

Camping les dunes is RIGHT next to the beach at Bretignolles.
I didnt go into the campsite and almost booked into there(phoned to do so and had a little difficulty (language barrier)so booked into Pin parasol).
The beach itself is good, lifeguarded and decent waves. Plenty of other beaches near by but alot are rocky(La sauize sp?) superb waves but VERY rocky.

We hated Les Dunes, we stayed in a static about 7 years ago and we nicknamed the site the concentration site. It was barren, the mobiles all in perfect rows and it had no atmosphere. Probably the worst site we've stayed on, lucky escape IMO hicky70.

Excellent news Pager33.....just back from Pin Parasol(big thumbs up ) and the drive was only 15mins to the beach so I wasnt too bothered about being away from the coast.
Lullabelle, try a municipal campsite? I've only been to the one at Beaumont sur sarthe so I have nothing to compare it with but if they're generally like that one then it could be the ticket.

Lullabelle, i don't thnk your mad sorting next years holiday! We have already booked our tunnel crossing for April and earmarked the sites we want to use! That is the earliest we have ever booked and it seems such a long time away!
Can't help with sites with access to a beach though.

Your Normoutier Indigo/Huttopia site was on my "perfect" list too, although there's a site worth checking out on the west coast of there and the Huttopia site is well worth it outside of July till after 23ish August. The stoopid traffic calms down outside of these times too.
I'm still on the search for the "perfect" beach campsite in "that" neck of the wood myself!
I sadly spent the entire winter searching online (800+ Brittany sites) for my particular needs...toddling distance from a beach (sand & rock pools), quiet site but with a bit of pride, no tour operators, a taste of France etc and so on. Our decision was ultimately Pors Peron see above (though it is English owned).
We go this week.....but, after our (and Brittany's) "BBQ" summer we instead have decided to go south inland...to a beach on a lake and then onto to perhaps Spain to a next to the sea beach site with more pitches than you could shake a stick at (don't ask).
My "personal" opinion on other the recommendations so far .....
Pin Parasol - Stayed over the years for over 30+ nights. Super site. Next generation have developed, so now is massive, but still "homely". 12km from the beach, so not your "perfect" remit. And in the vaste cultural dessert that is the Vendee. Lovely and oddly cheaper for Whitsun for a 3 berth beautifully presented static than a basic tent pitch. Old fogies from the CCC - Campervan & Caravan Club - might be seen rallying here slightly outside peak season.
Bretingnolles - Les Dunes - Let's just say I'd rather have needles poked in my wife's eye! I can name Traveller sites that are more appealing.
Tranche-sur mer - La Bel - Crazy Boss woman. Many tour operators. Better part of the Vendee. 700m to a decent beach. Tight spaces. Nice place....out of season. Preferably in winter when boss woman has packed her bags.
La Trinite-sur-mer - La Baie/La Plage - Bring Pop up tents, as they shoehorn you on to your pitch (see La Bel). Loads of UK & Irish tour operators. Beach is admittedly absolutely lovely though. Though Bongo drummers take over 11pm 'till 3am on the sand. Jeez!
La Foret - A great great location. Just EVERYONE else thinks it is too. Not been to the recommended site yet. Chances are we will do, as it fits our kids remit.
BTW - I asked the same question as you did at La Trinite-sur-Mer to a fellow camper.....Have you found the perfect beach site?
He said "Yes. My father-in-law did. About 35 years ago. And here we are. But it is called ....progress!"
Sorry if I have dissed anyone's perfect holiday in the above... I didn't mean to - just I having read the Original Posters previous postings (sneakily) I kinda guess what she/he are getting at.

Taking Viscount Bisquet's statement 'And here we are. But it is called ....progress....' there's a joke on the back of my French Camping Magazine, which is in
cartoon 1: a family having an idyllic holiday on their 'best ever' campsite,
cartoon 2: dad going on a Camping Forum telling the whole world of campers how great the site is,
cartoon 3: arriving on the same site the following year to find it noisy, full of campers, and with loud music playing,
cartoon 4: asking at reception why it is so busy, to be told that 'someone recommended us on UKCS (not actually the forum, but you get my gist) and so we got lots more bookings.
People tend to keep their own absolute favourites a bit of a secret, to keep them the way they found them.

Oh please don't keep your faves a secret!!! I'm already loving this thread and hoping that at some point I will go YEES!!!!!!! like whassername in When Harry Met Sally.
Also, what I may think is a perfect site may not be someone else's idea which is why we must share! I don't want one with evening entertainment of the karaoke/hi de hi variety. Or pools with lots of slides and shoots. Lots of people do though. After sharing my camping holiday with a visit to my mum's in south west France, I don't want to drive too far, but again some people quite like that.
I've been to the minicipal at Beaumont Sur Sarthe and it is wonderful (especially wonderful when you return from what appears to be a refugee camp) so I'm not adverse to them in any way. I just have a feeling they may not all be like that!
I want one that's basic, clean, decent pitch and close to a beach. I thought that wasn't too much to ask but then again I'm a naive newby camper with stars in her eyes.
Gosh, maybe it doesn't really exist except for in my dreams! Mind you, I haven't investigated all the ones listed above. It may be there...
They should have a website called comparethebeachcampsite.com. Simples.
