We would like to visit Italy next year but all the sites we have looked at seem to have small pitches which are not suitable for a twin axel van.  Does anyone have any experience of taking a twin axel van to Italy, and any suggestions of suitable sites with large pitches.

Just bumping the back to the top - as it's a new posting and deserves some help.

Someone out there must have some information.

This August, we are visiting Piantelle at Lake Garda. Check out their website because I am sure they have extra large pitches.

We`ve been to the lakes a couple of times and found suitable sites ok. One, at Bellagio, we had to manauevre the van around an access bend very carefully with our teenage sons pulling and tugging but we managed. There were not individual pitches so we had plenty of room on site. At http://www.camping.it/english/lombardia/europasilvella/
we had room for the van plus large awning, chairs table etc plus people carrier.

However, we looked round a few sites and pitches did generally seem to be smaller than in France

Have a good holiday.

Campsites in Italy are notorious for having smaller pitches than we are used to in the UK. However with careful planning you can find sites that have larger pitches. We recently went to Italy and on all five sites they had reasonable sized pitches. The Camping Cheque book and the ACSI Card book are handy tools for finding pitch size. On some sites you may have to pay a little more to get a larger pitch. I have put reviews of the sites we stayed at on here.

Hi

We have been to Italy twice.

2006 with a twin-ax Avondale Landranger (7.2m). We stayed at:

(1) Camping La Riva on Lake Como. This site, unusually for us we booked in advance directly with campsite. Our booked pitch was very large. We were delayed by a car breakdown and had to move pitches. Not quite as big as 1st but still adequate.

As David K says above the ASCI book is very useful as it gives average pitch area in m2. We have the ASCI DVD which includes a route planner.

Hope this helps.
Tim

(2) Camping Cavallino on Jesolo Peninsula near Venice. Large pitch, no access problems. Booked by phone enroute the day we arrived.

2007 with a single axle Bailey Senator Arizona (7.2m)

(1) Camping Roma Sporting Flash (?) on Lake Bracciano near Rome. We booked by phone as we travelled the day before arriving. Large pitch, no access problems.

(2) Campeggio Riva San Pietro, Marone. Again booked on the day by phone. Right on the shores of Lake Iseo. Tighter access but VERY HELPFUL owner accompanied us to pitch and with other campers helped push our 'van into position. Owner returned to help move 'van to a lakeside pitch later in our stay.

We have been tenting/'vanning on the Continent for 10+ years and rarely had problems with pitch size.

As David K says

I meant to say that I have put reviews of all 4 of the above sites in campsite search section.
