We'd like to pop over to France for a week and wonder if anyone could suggest a route.

We love history, architecture, scenery and don't usually like to spend more than a night in any one place.  We like to roam and explore.

Neither of us is given to long, arduous walks or lying on the beach.

We have no children or animals and we prefer small, quiet sites with electric hookups.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Britanny is nice but a bit cold & wet---warmer may be the Dordogne area-very picturesce around Perigueux/Sarlat/Brive area--for campsites look for Camping Municipals-(signposted in towns) local council run sites-genrally with clean facilities & often very cheap-£6 per night---

Every day should be a holiday!

In no particular order.  Beautiful Gothic Cathedrel at Reims, aprox 160m from Calais, plus champagne tours.  Ancient hilltop city at Laon, and Romanesque/Gothic cathedral.  WW1 battlefields and sites around Arras and Albert (underground tunnels housing a museum).  British memorial at Thiepval and Canadian at Vimy Ridge with restored trenches and fortifications.

Compeigne, site of the German WW1 surrender.  Another classic cathedral at Beauvais.  And of course the Normandy coast

I'm afraid that the battlefields make me feel very maudlin.  All those brave men who died in the most awful conditions.  I can feel their fear, resignation and frustration mingled with camaraderie, bravado and dogged determination.  I weep every time.

This poem by Sigfried Sassoon says it all.

Dreamers

Soldiers are the citizens of death's grey land,
Drawing no dividend from time's to-morrows.
In the great hour of destiny they stand,
Each with his feuds, and jealousies, and sorrows.
Soldiers are sworn to action; they must win
Some flaming, fatal climax with their lives.
Soldiers are dreamers; when the guns begin
They think of firelit homes, clean beds and wives.

I see them in foul dug-outs, gnawed by rats,
And in the ruined trenches, lashed with rain,
Dreaming of things they did with balls and bats,
And mocked by hopeless longing to regain
Bank-holidays, and picture shows, and spats,
And going to the office in the train.
