Aire just means place or zone, so it can be a motorway services, which some would advise against stopping on or it can be an 'Aire du camping car'(motorhome parking area)found in towns & on seafronts & N roads, generally clearly signposted.

The legality of of caravans using aires de camping car has been disscussed on French caravan forums & it is thought to be legal provided you put nothing on the ground(ie water containers etc)although in theory a copper could fine you & move you on.

French campsites often close in early Sept so you may have probs finding an open campsite but I would guess in Sept you would have no probs using a motorhome aire.

The C&CC has a deal with the RAC for its members, called 'Arrival'. This gives you the usual breakdown and recovery benefits, extended to cover your caravan. European cover is available as an add-on. This is not cheap (about £250 per annum with the European cover), but it is the absolutely best cover on the market for caravanners.

I would not stop overnight at an Aire. Find a local municiple site which are ten a penny and often very cheap.
