We stayed on the vendee but didn't travel as far as La Rochelle, the beaches around LeSables d'Onne especially les dunes are lovely and have surf schools on them, there was one just north of les sables which had better surf but was gravelly. Both our boys enjoyed bodyboarding on them this year.

I think to get even better surf you need to be south of LaRochelle, down towards Bordeaux.

Other people may have a better idea than me! this year was my first vendee visit.

You could do worse than Cote D'Argent in Hourtin Plage - 300m easy walk/bike ride to the beach and the waves were fab...campsite was great too.

Only problem is that the nearest 'decent' supermarkets (ie not the campsite one) are about 20-30 mins drive - so you need to be organised and go and stock up if you are self-catering.

The beaches at La Terriere and Longville Sur Mer in Southern Vendee are great for surfing. Both have lifeguards.
Some very good campsites in that area.
Our personal preference in Camping Bel in La Tranche Sur Mer. You can park your motor home and walk to a large supermarket and the town, which has a good selection of shops and restaurants. it dosent have the facilities that some of the other sites have, but we go to it for the location and its toilets etc. are cleaned constantly during the day.
Also there is a beach close by, that you can walk to, which you can use for surfing but it gets very busy, so we went to the other two I mentioned. Its a very short drive to them but go early as the car parks fill up in the afternoon.
The town also has surf shops, one of which managed to offload a surfboard onto our kids this year.
If you have any more questions just ask.

a good tip for the beaches is to arrive at lunchtime, all the french are picknicking until around 3pm at which point the beach starts to get very very busy.
