if i had the money to do a package to the perfect place for 2.5wks in August with what are now 4 adults most of the time according to travel agents (15&13yrs old) I probably would do, but as i can do the med coast of france or north spain and take the boys toys (xbox, fishing rod, blah blah blah!) for much less than half the price I think i will have no choice than to stick to that!

Also i can carry more wine in a caravan than in a suitcase, 70lts this year! lets hope it lasts longer than last year! 17

It is a tough one, when I look at the numbers for just two of us, say 2 weeks in the Southern Ardeche on a 4 star site, thats £400, then the Ferry £50, also 4 overnight stops £200, fuel £200 and road tolls £100, grand total of £950!, and that's without factoring in the cost of you kit, which over it's life must work out at £100 per year if using a tent, more so for a caravan, and even more for a Motorhome, so your talking £500 per person for a two week holiday, it should be cheaper, and of course can be, it dosn't seem to add up when you compare it to a package deal in the Sun, but there is just somthing special about doing your own thing, and not having to listen to some holiday rep, banging on about where to go and what to do, all that I know is that doing what we do now, is cheaper than going with Eurocamp/Keycamp, and cheaper than hiring a static, so for now I am quite happy to blow a grand on what is a bloody good holiday.

We are off october on an all incl hol to the canaries, haven't done a package for 5 years, since we had our little boy!

But have been to France 3 times, we love it but its not cheap, and its a lot of driving, packing, planning and stress!! We have just brought a new caravan so planning on camping for the next few years, we do love it, but thinking of maybe not doing so much driving, only thing is you don't always get the weather then! Ahhhhh lol

A few years ago we hired a beautiful secluded villa in Moraira, Costa Blanca. It had 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, aircon and a private pool. It was heaven...for the first week. The second week, the boys were keen to run around, play with other children, go off on their bikes, go to the park etc, they became bored by the peace and tranquility. The nearest beach was very crowded, and it was also very hot which gave my eldest prickly heat, really irritating. So great fro me, but not so good for the children. We hired it through holidayrentals, they have some great properties.

I have to say that airports drive me a little crazy nowadays. Having been an air stewardess before I had my boys, I really get frustrated with all the queueing that goes on. Our journey this year to France was great, straight on the ferry, no hold ups either way to or from Royan. 9 euros in tolls on the way down and 6 on the way back. Plus we live 10mins from Portsmouth so have an easy journey to the ferry.

If I could, I'd do my trip to France every summer, and then fit in a luxury holiday around Christmas and New Year. I'd love to take my boys to the Far East, to a 5* all inclusive resort. But I need to win the lottery first!

Hi
We do a combination of packages abroad (Grand Canaria/Tenerife)and campsites in the UK each year and enjoy both tyes of holiday.

Packages are loads more expensive and we tend to avoid them at all costs and book everything independantly because apartment quality is always better. Nothing worse than paying out loads of money only to find hotel is horrible. I usually manage to get a weeks holiday for around the 1K mark in school hols in Oct & Feb. (dearest time of year for the canaries)

We were thinking of taking our van to Spain but hubby can only get one weeks holiday at a time which makes it not worth going, so next summer we are trying something different.

Next june we are booked into Sanguli camp site for a week but travelling by plane. You can book direct with the site and its loads cheaper than Thomson Alfresco and other tour companies. We booked our flights with BA to Barcelona. Total cost for 3 adults (older child!) and 1 child came in at just under 1K for the half term holiday.

A package hol in a hotel/apartment for same week would have been more like 2.5K.

We're looking forward to experiencing a spanish campsite and hopefully when hubby is allowed more holiday than one week we will eventually take our van overseas as well.

If you decide on package route i would look on holidays uncovered web site for honest reviews about most of the hotels - we've found that these tend to be very accurate!

Hello

Can anybody advise me on the best way to travel down to Spain towing a caravan? There seems to be so many options e.g Channel tunnel, Plymouth/Santander ferry....Next year we are in search of sunsine and thaught of taking our caravan down to the med. We've have finally given up on the British summer. Any site recommendations and advise would be greatly appreciated.
