We were going to go to Provence last year but I was worried it may be too busy so headed slightly west to the Gard Provencal.... we stayed just outside the lovely town of Sommieres ... you could walk or cycle on a track from the site into the town too ... have to say it's one of our favourite places ever!

feeblecat ... where did you stay at carcassonne and do you recommend?

Liz9 - what was the name of the site near Sommieres?

We've stayed at Mas de Rey - more Gard than Provence. It's just outside the town of Uzes (not walking distance though) and is lovely. It's near Nimes, Pont du Gard etc and some nice strolls from site. Visited the area around St Remy too and that it lovely - as mentioned by Jayemcee above. We drove to walled town of Aigues Mortes one day, near the coast which was impressive but pretty busy, and also went to coast itself once but not really my cup of tea.

jek3 we stayed at a castels site domaine de massereau which was excellent ... don't think there's a huge number of sites in the area.

No, the coast isn't my cup of tea either..... we went down to Grau du Roi for a visit but it was soooooo busy!  Aigues Mortes was interesting though.

Frejus is gorgeous and you can take dogs on the beaches their and at St Raphael.
