Don't know a thing about Provence but looks nice. This year we did the Tarn Gorge and then Dordogne. The French Alps are looking likely next year so it's a thought to twin with Provence, perhaps 8 days or so in each. Where in Provence can you good peeps recommend. Usual preferences for me are - not overdeveloped for tourists, smashing scenery, good walking directly from site if poss (by walking I really mean strolling), not too much driving required to see a lot of the area (this year we covered 3390 MILES) and most importantly - dog friendly. We don't have children with us so kiddy type stuff not required. Is this a big ask?

It looks as if you like our sort of places. For the last few years we have been going to the Bouches-du-Rhône area round about St Rémy-de-Provence or Maussane. There are loads of interesting places within easy driving distance and the sites are not huge or over developed. We have found it's better to keep back from the coast a little to avoid the crowds but it's easy to get there if you want. We didn't get away this year, I'm keeping myself sane in this terrible weather by planning for next year!
thanks, I'll google the area. I don't mind doing a visit to the coast but only prob is we have the dog and the beaches tend not to permit dogs. We went down to Agde for the day this year when visiting Carcassone (just to say we had been to the coast) - HATED it. Everything we hate in a place, busy (but not in a good way), commercialised, built up.......so it would be nice if there was a nice beach area near Provence we could visit (for one day only) that allowed dogs on the beach. Not essential though.
The only places on the coast we've been to were Cassis- very busy but we went for a longish sail and escaped the crowds- and Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the Camargue. We've been there twice, the first time was on a Saturday towards the end of July, that was horrendous, so busy there was no where to stop for miles on end, then we tried again last year, midweek at the start of July and we practically had the place to ourselves, we went another sail along the Petit Rhône though which would be no use for you with a dog.

We were going to go to Provence last year but I was worried it may be too busy so headed slightly west to the Gard Provencal.... we stayed just outside the lovely town of Sommieres ... you could walk or cycle on a track from the site into the town too ... have to say it's one of our favourite places ever!
feeblecat ... where did you stay at carcassonne and do you recommend?
Hi, we didn't stay at Carcossone, we visited it then drove an hour or so to the coast - Agde - and stayed overnight at a campsite there. Sorry, not my cup of tea, didn't like the Agde area. I visited Carcossone whilst staying in the Tarn Gorge area (loved it, would def go back).
Liz9 - what was the name of the site near Sommieres?
We've stayed at Mas de Rey - more Gard than Provence. It's just outside the town of Uzes (not walking distance though) and is lovely. It's near Nimes, Pont du Gard etc and some nice strolls from site. Visited the area around St Remy too and that it lovely - as mentioned by Jayemcee above. We drove to walled town of Aigues Mortes one day, near the coast which was impressive but pretty busy, and also went to coast itself once but not really my cup of tea.
Thanks Liz. Yes, Grau du Roi was where we went too - couldn't find any toilets as I remember! Aigues Mortes is amazing but it was just so incredibly hot when we were there and there was a festival on so the place was mobbed - we were glad to get back to our nice peaceful campsite. Lovely area though.

Frejus is gorgeous and you can take dogs on the beaches their and at St Raphael.
This is one of our favourite areas too. I would go for staying just a little inland e.g. at Puget-sur-Argens or towards the Bagnol forest. There are some pretty large sites around this area but there are some more homely ones too. Large beach at St Aygulf too, with roadside parking (jump over the wall on to the beach). Parking on the old aerodrome for the beach between St Aygulf and Frejus. Plenty of places inland to go and see. We've travelled into Monaco and to the Gorge du Verdon from Frejus. It does get busy though, but quieter inland.
