We are looking at going to beekse bergen next august with vacancesoleil in one of their tents, and was looking for some advice on best ferry route. With 3 kids (7,5 &5) didn't know wether better to go Dover- Dunkerque and longer drive, or harwich-hook holland but longer ferry. Is there much on board the ferry to keep them occupied 8 hours? Will probably do stop over the night before the crossing so no long drive to the port beforehand which ever way we go.

Also wondered how food and drink prices compare at these sort of places as this will be our first time in Holland.

We found prepared food prices quite high, but we took most of our own food.  We didn't go looking for major supermarkets though.  We went on the night sailing from Harwich and used tesco clubcard tokens to pay for nearly all the ferry cost.  Dutch roads are not such a pleasure to drive on as roads in France.  They seem to run on the top of dykes and are narrow and more crowded.

Right from Dunkerque you have 250 kms to do this should take you including comfort stops less than 3 hours.

From Hook you have 120kms to do depending on time especially round the Rotterdam Ring road this could take you upto 2 hrs to complete, also the first 10 miles from Hook to the motorway is not to be done by the easily scared.

So is the hour or so that you will save on the drive worth paying an extra £150-£200 on the ferry??????????? Personally no.

As for food it's Holland never been the cheapest place to dine out but go to the supermarket and you will be fine.

At Beekse Bergen there is a fast food bar where you can get fries etc that is reasonably priced but the restaruant is pricey.

There are supermarkets around 5km from the site.

As stated its only 3hrs drive from Dunkerque so that would be your best route if you want to save money. You don't say where you live but as you mention an overnight stop & if you live 'oop north it might be worth considering the overnight Hull-Rotterdam/Zeebrugge route if you could do that without an overnight hotel stop in't UK.

You can also do Harwich/Hook overnight which obviously costs more than the daytime ferry as you have to pay a cabin but it might be cheaper than paying for a hotel.

Thanks for replies. We're from the west (Gloucester) so Hull not an option, think Dunkerque will be the way to go then. Hubby not so confident about the roads so just from that point of view it sounds better.

From where you are Dover is easier to get to than Harwich, the M25 aint chocka all the time! If you get your timing right you could easily do the whole trip in a day.

I know we could do it in 1 day but with the time it takes us to get going in the mornings I would rather split the trip and feel a little less stressed about getting there. At least we won't get caught out by anything unexpected then - went to Perranporth this summer and took a ridiculous amount of time to get there!
