It obviously depends on how much you like driving but we opted to go from Calais down to the Languedoc region of the south of France this year and found it much quicker than we had expected, especially as we were only doing 60 mph towing. We reached just south of Orleans on the first day and by starting early on the second day we were down at the coast by 3pm. The weather was fab for the whole two weeks and we would definitely do it again but to a different site.

Take a quick look at the Camping Cheques website - select 'Our campsites' then the map of Spain - each dot on the map represents a site - and clicking on the map gives you quick access to an information page about the site, then you can go directly to the site's own website if you're interested.
It doesn't cover all sites, obviously, just those which accept Camping Cheques, but is a quick and easy way to see what types of sites/where sites are situated - in one website.
We sailed portsmouth to Bilbao this year then drove across spain to camping sanguli not far from salou absolutely fantastic, but didn't enjoy the travelling the drive to and from the ferry was long and the 2 days on the ferry felt never ending, dont think we will be doing it again.
We've driven to Cambrils Park, near to Salou, in about the same time as JellyBean took for his ferry crossing and trek across Spain - ie two overnight stops, and we've always really enjoyed the drive through France. From our point of view it's nice to travel through such beautiful countryside, able to stop where and when you want, and eat whatever you wish, than to spend the equivalent time (and a lot more money) on a ferry crossing. However, whichever way you choose to get there, it's still quite a long way - and I suppose even then there's no 'Guarantee' of good weather. Friends of ours had almost two weeks of rain in Spain in 2008.
www.ballena-alegre.com/ Went here in August with friends for 2 weeks it cost our family 848 euros which was for 4 adults on a plus pitch but cheaper pitches are available. The beach was beautiful and hardly anyone on the bit we were on. The site was very clean and the facilities were very good, the supermarket was reasonable. If you like the heat this is the place to go the only downside was the fact that there was very little shade where we were so in a tent it was very hot. The pitches we stayed on L70 & L71 were virtually on the beach.
Hello Kimburly, we are looking at that site for next year, were you able to book what pitch numbers you wanted, we we have a 27ft motorhome plus a trailer with a small car on, also a 3mt gazebo. we like the look of pitches m85-m88 or p17-p24. Any more you can tell us would be great.
stayed at the internacional amberesat empuriabrava very good site, plenty of trees and shade, swinpool not so good pool had a 2-3" ring of dirt around the edge of the pool at the waterline, but who needs the pool with a beach and they have in that area..
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
If you are considering Spain don't think you have to go to the Med - we went to Cantabria this summer (north coast west of Bilbao & Santander) - absolutely fantastic, great beaches (very like Cornwall), beautiful food, great weather and very 'Spanish' and unspoilt - not chock full of foreign tourists!
We went to Camping Playa de Oyambre nr Comillas and it was excellent - Google it (UKCS - if you publish my review I could post a link to it!!)
