I was thinking when we go to italy next year as I will have a 1 year old with us. Do you not think I will need one?

I guess it depends on the place in italy but my experience of france is that while you get the odd mozzie there are probably less than in the UK. We always pack 'detox' - doesn't mark a surface and knocks them clean off the wall on those rare occasions we encounter them

There were plenty of mozzies on the site we stayed on in Italy, we were all bitten and that was with various lotions, potions and candles. When we got off the ferry at Treporti and went to collect our bikes we were beseiged but near water so much worse.

Thanks for the tips but we are going to be staying near Lake Garda so maybe I should invest.

We used boots mosquito plug ins - thing is you never know if it worked or not but we didn't find any in our tent in France.

Best thing we've ever used is the Boots extra strength mosquito spray with high deet content - Im sure its suitable for children over 6mths. We know it worked as when we pitched our tent in France this year we forgot to spray ourselves and were literally eaten alive - after this we sprayed every morning and night and forgot about mosquitos for the rest of the holiday.

We use plug ins too. When we went to Cairo earlier this year we took ours with us to an 'Eco-lodge' in an oasis where we stayed a couple of nights. We had mosquito nets, but forgot to pull them down (too much wine and a very late night!) but had plugged our tablet thing in before we went out. We slept soundly all night and not a single bite - but our friend in the next room was bitten to death (and he lives in Cairo and reckons to be immune to them!).
