We have progressed from amateur campers to intermediate over the last 5 years in (mainly wet & windy) UK & now looking to venture to France for some sun.

We have lots of boxes to tick however & would appreciate any recommendations to meet the following criteria:-

Large 8 birth tent / reasonably close to surfing beach / dog friendly campsite & beach / lots of activities for a teenager to mix & make friends / pref not too down the coast (first trip driving in France)!

Any advice or recommendations gratefully received!

Hi treacly and welcome.

The Atlantic coast is best for surfing imo. You could look at the area around Biarritz/Bicarrose(sp????).

Try the campsite search on here. Someone else will be along soon I'm sure that can give you far more advice.

You will love camping in France. Wouldn't worry about the driving aspect, especially as you don't have young children. It's a doddle- far less hassle than England.

Driving in France is generally much easier/quieter roads if you avoid the Paris area.

Further south you go the better the weather gets but the atlantic coast (As above) or not as far down is very good.  Possibly around Bordeaux?

Could try Brittany if you don't want to drive too far - take a direct crossing on brittany ferries but a bit more into summer for the weather to improve here.

French sites are generally of a much better standard than UK in my experience.

Municipal sites don't always have toilet seats for some reason!!

I think you need to decide which area you want to go and then use the numerous site directories available on the internet including this one to find a site that suits you. There are thousands

Thanks for all the guidance - I am very impressd by the speed of response!  We live in Dorset so would be travelling from either Weymouth or Portsmouth by Ferry which wont take too long.

No towing involved but a restless dog & teenager so pref not huge amount of miles but will travel if really good campsite.

Have you sorted out your Pet Passport? It's a six monthe process. You'll need to sort it if you intend to go to France next year.
