The Swansea to Cork Ferry is due to resume on the 1st March 2010 and I am thinking of taking the motorhome over in early June. Does anyone know of any good campsites and places to visit ?

It depends how far you want to travel, Eagle Point in Bantry Bay is by far the best in the area, the Blarney Caravan Park is about 6 miles from Cork and that is also good,  If you want to go a bit further Flemmings White Bridge in Kilarney. You will not be disappointed in any of those.

Hi Blackswan. It all depends on what you want from your Holiday

If you have a young family Then

  • Garrettstown House Holiday Park is very good near beach good play ground and also dose kids moves/disco every night.
  • The Hideaway Camping & Caravan Park also good and a bit further to drive
  • Parsons Green Caravan & Camping Park this place is on a open farm with lots to do for the kids

If you have an older family and like to hill walk and enjoy the area

  • Glen of Aherlow campsite is very clean and lots of walks in the area
  • Wave Crest Caravan Park this will take your breath away fab site just not alot to do for kids
  • Eagle Point Camping this is another great site you also will love the surronding area.

Hope this helps you and they are all within a 3 hour drive of the ferry

Happy camping

Andrew.

The Apple near Cahir, is a great small site.
It is on a fruit farm and the toilets and showers are in a large barn, but spotlessly clean.
Its very handy for a stopover, or for a longer stay, as there is a lot to do in the area.

We did a tour of Southern Ireland in 2007; we didn't camp the whole time but our itinerary included a stop at Mannix point Campsite on the Ring of Kerry (Cahirciveen) which we loved and would highly recommend!

Our route was: Dublin - accross to Galway/ Connemara - down the West Coast - Dingle - Peninsular Ring of Kerry - Kinsale/ Cork - up the east coast back to Dublin.

It was all brilliant but highlights were the boat trip from Galway to the Aran Islands & Dún Aonghasa fort, we hired bikes on the island which was great. Connemara was beautiful but we had torrential rain! Moran's Oyster Cottage in Kilcolgan (yummy sea food, not just oysters!), Cork English Market, Kinsale. We were a little dissapointed by the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare - really touristy, busy, restriced access to cliff walks - but that was just our opinion.

Oh and Ireland isn't a cheap option by the way - it is expensive & probabaly made worse by the poor exchange rate at the moment.

Mannix Point and Wavecrest are both lovely sites, helped by the good weather we had in 2006. The advantage of Mannix Point is that it is near the town - shops, eating places, fuel and cashpoints. Wavecrest is in a stunning location but there is only the site shop - 10 mile drive to other shops, cashpoint and fuel.

Hi blackswan,
You might find that these prices are typical for all the sites in S. Ireland. There are some more expensive than others, but are steep when you compare the facilities to G.B. or France. The exchange rate wont help either.
We used to holiday each year in S. Ireland, but have found that even paying the extra cost of a ferry, we get much better value for money elsewhere.
I'm sure someone will disagree with me, but have checked the prices out recently, as we thought we might go back next summer at some point, but just cant justify paying the site fees for all the facilities you get.

We won't be going back either until/unless the £ comes back up against the Euro. however,if you wanted to be at the other end of Ireland, you could take the ferry to Northern Ireland and stay either near Derry/Londonderry (think there is a new site there), or in Fermanagh to visit Donegal.

Thanks for all the replies it sounds to me that Ireland is very expensive, now that the pound - euro is almost equal. I think we will go back to Scotland again next year and tour around the Highlands.

blackswann.
Why dont you do what Mrs Bonce has suggested, come to N. Ireland, especially as you are thinking of going to the Highlands.
You can get the ferry from Stranraer or Cairnryan, you may already know this. It wont be as cheap as crossing the English Channel, but I would imagine the the ferry you were thinking of using wouldnt be either.
There are some good sites here in the North and you dont have to worry about the exchange rate.

You can use Tesco vouchers for at least 1 of the ferries, if you shop there.
