Hi

After 10 years of holidaying in France we fancy a change and are thinking about Holland.

Can anyone who has been camping in Holland give me their opinion of their stay?

What campsites are good?  Is there plenty to do and see?

Is it right Holland does not accept credit cards/debit cards.

If we do decide to go -it will be in August and we will sail from Dover to Calais/Dunkerque.

Thanks for your help.

Ali

If you do a search on this website, there are loads of threads on Holland, one in particular is called Holland in August: HERE

I've done a search and HERE is a list of all the threads, no less than 115 of them!

Some are probably a bit out of date, but there should be quite a lot of info which will be useful.

Supermarkets, shops & local filling stations(including unmanned)generally don't take UK credit/debit cards, not really a problem as there are plenty of ATMs about. Motorway service areas & campsites generally do.

The campsites we've been to have been to a high standard & theres cycle tracks everywhere so its good to take bikes. English is widely spoken.

We went to Sevenum for a week using camping cheques in August.

Great site, Great facilities would definitely return.

I may be a tiny bit biased as I live here but imho it is a fab country to live in, visit and camp in :)

Do you have children and what kind of things are you interested in? Walking, cycling, museums etc?

There is plenty to do/see but it depends on what you like :)

Will keep an eye on this thread and hopefully can come up with some suggestions

Angie

netherlands - one of my all time favourites - and the landscapes are more varied than stereo-typing suggests.
Friesland has lots of lakes, there are hills in the Limburg - lots of great villages and towns and excellent public transport
food is also good - watch out for apple pie pffertijes and Indonesian riistafel
and chocolate - and beers - and frites with mayo - it doesn't just happen in Belgium

but most importantly it's the people that really make a difference - in any country

decide what you like - I'm sure you'll find something to impress - enjoy your trip

On the credit/debit cards:

Credit cards are widely accepted in restaurants, sometimes in large departments stores, almost never in supermarkets.

Debit cards: at the moment the Dutch and UK systems are still different but Holland is changing to the UK system. Although this is going gradually there are more and more places were they will accept your debit card. In most of the larger petrol stations debit card use is no problem.

But always make sure that you've got some cash with you in case your credit/debit card isn't accepted. There are ATM's basically everywhere so that's not a big problem.
