We are thinking of staying at/near Le Mans for the 24hr race at the end of our hoilday, stopping off there on the way home. Can anyone recommend a campsite very near or has anyone stayed at the race track and can tell us about facilities etc?

Thanks

Beware of the yobbo element outside the circuit that has now made this a no go event for many of the Lotus 7 Club members.
They now prefer to attend the Le Mans Classic which is held every two years .

I am afraid I cannot help with camp sites, the closest that I have stayed was at Beaumont-sur-Sarthe which many people on here recommend .

think  the local sites get incredibly busy over race weekend. We have stayed at the municipal site at Alencon which is not tooo far. Not over race weekend though. It was a nice site with big pitches near town, river walks etc but no toilet seats! Why do the french do that?

Blatchatter. Please can you elaborate on what you mean by yobbos? Need to know everything as would be taking a car crazed 3yr old with us.

Camping le Vieux Moulin at neuville sur Sarthe is just to the north of le Mans.  Pleasant if a bit 'tired' - good value though.

Hi Mark

We've done the LM24 for many years but didn't go this year. It's become too much like hard work to get decent camping tickets without going to an agency plus the noise on the campsites is problematic for me.

If you want to stay on circuit, I'd recommend Maison Blanche, you'll need to book it through an agency as you won't get it direct from the ACO who organise the event.

Pitch sizes are 7m x 5m so chances are you'll need two pitches, most agencies will make you buy two General Admittance tickets to the race for each camping pass you book (which is nice )

There is no electric on any of the sites other than Houx (and I doubt you'll get Houx as it tends to be prebooked by car clubs) and the facilities on most sites are basic with an insufficient of number of loos and showers, the blokes loo queue is usually about 15 people deep! It's better for us girlies because there are fewer there.

The campsites will be noisy overnight and by noisy I mean that many of the groups will take large stereo systems with amps that you'll hear from some distance away.

There is debate about yobbish behaviour, certainly it's quite rowdy, most of it is good natured but some is more problematic.

Personally, I'm not sure that I would stay on circuit with a little one, the roadways can be busy and some of the "boy racers" don't drive well so you'd have to keep a really close eye on him.   BUT at least by being on circuit you can come and go in short chunks if he struggles in the heat?

I'd probably stay at Spay which is a municipal campsite about 5km away, it will mean driving in each day and the roads will be busy. There is also a campsite called Bounty which is English owned and I think they run a bus service to the race.

The other option that we have discussed is staying at Spay and also buying one pitch on Maison Blanche and sticking a day tent and some cooking gear on it so that we have a base for the day.

Can I recommend you go to Clubarnage.com and join there, there will be loads of info to help you. You can also download their Guide to LM for free (or preferably for a small charity donation!). Also look at the LM forum on Pistonheads.com for a feel for the event.

Ask if you want any more info.

Driving in the area can be unpleasant as some people have taken to throwing water bombs. Some of these have contained other liquids (I'll leave it to your imagination). As Caterham 7's are generally driven without any weather protection it is a particularly nasty experience.

Thank you all so much for your replies. We have given it a lot of thought and strongly considered what you have said. Due to this we think we will give it a miss. I dont really think it is the sort of place to take a 3yr old. We will just have to wait a while.

Thanks again. This forum really does help with the all important holiday decisions!

I've been thinking about this. You can avoid the yob element by avoiding certain bits of road at certain times and on the whole it's not too bad.

BUT I think it's probably too big an event for a three year old. The weather can be really hot (not the last couple of years - they've been very wet!) and you'd need to do a lot of walking to get around the different bits of the circuit. Most of the ground isn't really suitable for a buggy.

Even if you were happy with the camping I think it would be pretty hard going.

The classic is a much nicer event (and will happen in 2010) - mid July I think. The weather is often even hotter, the campsites are quieter but it has been becoming more like the 24 hour as the years go on. It's a nicer event to get around and there are loads of cars to look at in the Paddocks whereas there is very little access for the 24 hour.

I see you're in Kent, I help run race meetings at Brands Hatch, let me know if you're ever coming along.
