Gradually sorting out our first trip next year to the South of France and have noticed that many sites indicate the type of BBQ that can be used and for good reason.
Therefore, I ask those of you who have experience of sites in the South of France what seems to be the most widely used bbq set up that is taken: GAS/ELEC/COALS
Thanks JB

They're all still used but because of the restrictions I haven't used a charcoal BBQ for many years. I've used many gas BBQ's but found the Cadac the best (in my opinion). However, recently I have changed to electric and, if there is enough juice in the plug, would be hard pressed to use anything else. The main reason being that you pay for your electricity whether you use it or not, so why not use as much as possible. Just remember to make sure there is enough amps otherwise it'll all go wrong for you and your neighbours.
I notice a lot of continentals have small table top electric grills. As Trooper says you do have to watch the amps. We were staying at Serignan Plage once and the Frence couple next to us in a motorhome were using some sort of electric BBQ. I could not understand why he kept walking down the the corner of the pitch until I realised that he kept tripping the electrics. We don't BBQ whilst away but do use a Camping Gaz 2 burner stove via the external gas point which is handy.
We noticed very few charcoal bbq's this year in the South. Mainly gas. We bought a cadac especially for France. I loved it, very handy for breakkies (fry ups, eggie bread etc for when you get fed up with croissants) as well as bbq'ing. I would list my cadac as one of my better buys of the year (along with my tarp!!!).

We visited a site this year (near Brive) that did not allow charcoal BBQs due to risk of fire to the surrounding woodland. It was a bit isolated (great for some peace and quiet though!) in amongst some rural woodland. I didn't see or hear that gas BBQs couldn't be used, we were just warned about using charcoal. The site did cook BBQ food using only gas though.
We also use cadac, it can be a bit of a pain when its windy, and of course IMHO its really a big (easy chef ) frying /griddle pan, although next year for our French hols we will take a cheapy charcoal bbq with us, one of the fold up types, as well as the cadac

------------- Does it ever get better than spare ribs and chops straight off the BBQ
Many camp sites in the south of France (Provence) will not allow charcoal BBQ's because of the fire risk. One camp site we used to visit organised a communal site BBQ on one night each week - people just took their own food ond BBQed it themselves. The owner provided local rose wine free of charge (you helped yourself until it ran out). Excellent social event. People would grab a table near to the bar, or take up their own tables and chairs.
At Camping Neptune, at Grau d'Agde, where we were in May this year, there's a communal barbecue, where you can use charcoal, adjacent to one of the access roads through the site. It became a social meeting point each evening as people brought their own meat/fish to barbecue. Charcoal barbecues were not allowed on the pitches, though gas/electric ones were.
