In August we stayed at La Pointe St Gilles in Brittany, some of the elements we loved was the proximity to the beach, a beautiful town area nearby (Benodet), and the water park, epecially the slides for the kids. However we did not feel the service was very good, the pitches were cramped, it was very busy and commercial, often noisy at night and our tent was constantly illuminated by a security light.

I was wonderering if anyone could recommend a site for us, I have done numerous searches and cant seem to find a hapy medium! I suppose our list of wishes would include, pool with slides, town nearby, close to beach, drive up to around 4hrs from ferry port, and somewhere a little less commercial!

Its no wonder I cant find what we are looking for is it! Sorry to seem picky sometimes small things can make such a difference, i so want to choose the right place, maybe I'm over thinking things! What do you think?

Hi! We always go further down the coast nr Bordeaux which is further than you want to go but what I will say is that if you go to a large commercial site of the type you describe in August it will tend to be noisy, often until the early hours with groups of drunken teenagers wandering about.

The staff will be seasonal, mainly students who will care more about their social lives outside work than actually cleaning the bogs. It also may depend where you actually pitch up. Choosing a pitch near all the facilities might seem a good idea but you will find it more peaceful at the back of the site but with a long walk unless you take bikes which is a good idea anyway.

Trouble is with recommendations is that people can have very different experiences at the same site. If you want somewhere quieter & cleaner you may have to go for a smaller site a few miles inland, run by its owners with a small pool.

A smaller site will be cheaper of course also you might find the large site better in the last 2wks of August when most of the French/Dutch/Germans will have gone home.

It's funny you mention Bordeaux as we've found a lovely looking site called Panorama Du Pyla, and its just the drive that's putting us off! about 6 1/2 hours according to multimap. I suppose if we planed a stop over it wouldn't be too bad?

Might start looking a bit further inland also!

Can well recommend that one, see my review of the site HERE, although if you go in August it may be worth booking a pitch. This year, pager33 tried to get in there on spec in August, and couldn't get a pitch!! It really is a fabulous site, and with 1 overnight stop, it would be very easy to get to.

Assuming that your problem was caused by a bollard type light, I always take a roll of duck tape to cover up any security lights that are shining over the pitch, so that the tent is in a shadow.

As for the perfect site - this is obviously personal choice, as some like the busier sites. For me a site has to have less then about 250 pitches and not too many statics. Also find the coastal areas very busy so always choose to stay inland.

I hope the photo works you can just about see the troublesome light, its a street light style one, which they said they couldn't do anything about, as it was for security reasons, the entrance was just the other side of the fence on the left. They refused to move us, we had no choice over pitch in the first place and said we could leave early but wouldn't get any refund. In the end we opened up our roof box to stop some of it from shining directly into our bedroom compartment.
