am caught between royan area or st jean de monts area , with tourer, never been to either, will be our first time next year to france (or anywhere for that matter) is the climate much better or not much different for the extra milage,is the coast that windy all the way down atlantic or are there sheltered resorts any imfo appreciated

You will probably get loads of response re your question, but the areas you mention are extremely popular in high season, so you will get more focused replies if you give your dates of holiday, and your likes and dislikes re sites.

St Jean is chocker in high season, but off peak for me is as different again, as is Royan. But then , off peak, not all the facilities are open, so you takes your pic.

Give a bit more detail, then sit back and wait.

IMHO having been to both, Royan area gives more variety and a greater choice of beach type.  I find it slightly less busy than St Jean de Monts area.  Driving time is not significantly greater if arriving in Calais. We've also genreally experienced better weather that bit further south.
