We are considering taking the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao next August for a 2 week holiday in Spain.

We have a car & (hopefully by then) a trailer tent and there are four of us.

I have just got a quote from Ferries.co.uk for £1,124 - travelling within the school holidays next year.

They say this is an 'early booking' bargain price and it includes a 4 berth inside cabin each way.

Has anyone done this journey?  Does this seen like a good price? Any tips or advice on making this journey?

Thanks a lot.

Martin

We did Plymouth-Santander this year - a similar pice but 18hours and "superior" 4 berth outside cabin with flat Screen TV and tea & coffee making Facilities.

That's about the price they charge. We tried to book for a week in May (half term) last year and for 4 people and a car you were looking at £1,200. If you want to take a trailer then God only knows how much that would cost. That was booking direct with P & O.

We decided to fly to Bilbao (Easyjet of Ryan Air) and hire a car. Cost of the flights £60 per person return and the car hire £170 for a week. £410 all in now that's what I call a saving! We could then afford another couple of cheap flights to Amsterdam and Malaga.

Thanks for the above info....

Did anyone do this journey with a trailer tent this year?  How much did it cost?

Do they count a Tariler tent as a caravan?

Thanks

Martin

Horses for courses. To drive from Cherbourg to Bilbao will take about 2 full days. You'll save of course on fuel, as it's cheaper over there. You'll lose time on the actual holiday though, but you will see some stunning scenery as you drive down through France, and the Pyrenees. If you take an average cost of a ferry from Poole-Cherbourg of say £400, there's no way that it's going to cost over £800 in fuel to get there!

To me, that's a waste of money, that could help you live in style in France/Spain for around 4 weeks or more!

But, as I said.....horses for courses!
