We spent a week in a small village - Vabriga in Istria during the summer, not camping but in an apartment. A mile or so away was a camping site, it was a huge complex and had its own private beach.  From what I can gather the campsites do seem to be very big and the Germans really like the area along with other landlocked Eastern Europeans!  We also spent a holiday in the area 25 years ago and found the transformation of Croatia from it's Eastern bloc influences quite amazing - it is now a very modern cosmopolitan place where we got a very warm welcome and found it very good value compared to France.  We flew to Trieste and drove down through Italy and Slovenia - massive queues at peak travel times to get through the toll at Trieste and also at the Croatian border crossing from Slovenia - so choose your times of travel carefully!  Also coming home we started to panic when we got caught up in a traffic jam coming out of Croatia caused by the sheer volume of traffic.  If we have the time to do a European tour we would definitely have this area on our itinery.

Hi Tim & Cary, I drove my lunar Lexon to Croatia last july. I travelled through France, Belgium,Germany, Austria, Slovinia, Italy and into Croatia. We stopped at a campsite in Saarlouis in germany called Campingplatz Dr Ernst Dadder. E Mail www.camping-saarlouise. Tel 06831 3691. We then stopped on the Austria border before going on to Lake Bled. We then drove to Vrsar in Croatia and stayed on a campsite called Porto Sole. It was a lovely site and had to small water inlets were you could launch your boat. Wecv travelled throughabout 6 tuunnels and the longest was about 8km. All in all it was a lovely journey and we are going again this year on the 19th July for 4 weeks to the same campsite in Vrsar we enjoyed it that much. I will find the name of the campsite in Austrai and post it tomorrow. Hope this is of some value.

Hi - we went to Slovenia last August and although we took a tent not caravan I would recommend a wonderful site called Kamping Kamne - its about an hour north of Ljubliana right in the heart of the mountains - with an awesome view of Triglav. It was a quiet well run site, only a few minutes from the Austrian border. We didn't drive through the longest tunnles, but there were 8km long ones on route.

Camping Kamne is really great. Camping Bled looked too mad for us, I took a walk around it one afternoon and it was massive and heaving - not our sort of thing but an ideal location for Lake Bled. Lake Bohinj is much more peaceful 9still busy) but more rugged feeling than Bled, but still lots of sites nearby.

Hope this helps:)

I have to recommend a fantastic campsite in slovenia - Camping Menina. It's a little off the beaten track, north east of Ljubliana, but well worth the extra miles. The secnery is spectacular, as it is throughout Slovenia, but what makes this site stand out from anywhere else we have stayed is the owner. He has huge enthusiasm for his site and the local area. He organises great mountain walking trips, white water rafting, social events and any questions you have will be answered in detail, nothing is too much trouble. We are teachers like you and had 6 weeks holidays. The plan was to go on to Croatia, but we fell in love with Slovenia and never made it there. We drove from the South West of ireland to Slovenia following the motorway through Paris, Munich, Saltzburg. Yes it was a massive drive (only 2 nights stopovers though), yes there was some long tunnels in Austria, (although I thought the speed of the drivers in the outside lanes in Germany was scarier) BUT it is SO worth it. The memories of our trip have been keeping us going throughout this dreadful winter we've been having. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
