We have about 10 days at the end of Feb beginning of March with nothing planned, and we was wondering if it is worth taking the van across to france for a short break, if we went would there be any of the small c/l type sites open,
we are thinking of of crossing with Norfolk line and would hope to find a site with in about 2 hours from the port,
any ideas of what to expect for that time of the year,
just a couple of O A P s with nothing better to do

You would be more likely to find sites open in Belguim/Holland that time of yr & better for cycling if you take bikes. All weather site here less than 4hrs from Dunkerque, all motorway.

Unless you are prepared to travel more than two hours I suspect you won't notice a lot of difference in the weather. Best perhaps to head towards a big city, like Paris as you will have plenty to do. Although the list posted above shows a surprising number of campsites open all year they are geographically well spread so you won't always have a massive choice in any one area. Its always a good idea to check they will be open when they say.

There are always some sites and some nice sites open but as David says they are spread out. Don't expect too much of the weather. Far south it Might be ok but might not. e.g. Beziers this week 10 - 15 degrees rain.

Why not head north into Belgium. There are some excellent sites at Ypres and Kemmel with great walking, cycling, military history etc... Bruges is also well within 2 hours. You might also like to check out St.Omer (good municipal site) and visit the massive V2 launch site at La Coupole.

BUT... I've gone to France at that time of year and rather regretted it. I'd prefer to wait till after Easter when more places would be open.

Thanks for the comments regarding a short break in Feb/March, we have given the matter more thought, and after reading your thoughts, have decided we will give France a miss so early in the year, it could be more trouble than its worth,hopefullt we will make it later in the year when we should be having a bit better weather.
