Thought I'd give some fantastique feedback on the chambre d'hote B&B we stayed in en route back to the UK from the south of France last summer - midway, near-ish Clermont-Ferrand, cost less than the chain motels on the way. La Berthoderie is a beautiful country house in extensive grounds, with antiques and lots of charm, run by the owners who speak excellent English (if need be). Table d'hote also available, which we took advantage of - dinner was really lovely, with aperitifs and wine included in the price. We had two separate rooms (the family suite), one for our two boys (they both fit just fine into the small double bed) and one for us with an en suite bathroom - absolute luxury, but very affordable - highly recommended. http://www.laberthoderie.com for more information.

If you've also stayed in a great chambre d'hote in France, please post details - I think, especially when you've been camping, it's really lovely to enjoy a bit of luxe when on the road, especially if the price is the same as a Formule 1!

That looks to be an excellent find PA but unfortunately for us the location isn't quite right, being too far for us to travel in one day from home (5hrs 30 or so from Calais).  Will certainly file away for future reference though.

Now if anyone could suggest something similar in the Dreux or Chartres area........

Thanks for reminding me about these hidden gems. We switched to BB Hotels about five years ago as they're so close to the motorways and easy to find in the dark. Also you get to watch trashy french TV (SexyZap anyone??)

This one we found because it slept four in two rooms that were connected (we had two small children at the time.) Midway between Nantes and Rennes only about two minutes from the main road - infinitely more character than the 'plastic' chain hotels.
I think it must have been a stopover between Cherbourg and the Dordogne. It costs about the same as a BB Family room with breakfast but you get the real French experience (including pumpkin jam )
We sat outside on a very humid evening with a bottle of wine while our two kids wailed in their room, thinking we'd gone and left them for good

Have also stayed at a lovely one in Rots about ten minutes from Caen, and a Normandy farmhouse somewhere that was a devil to find in the encroaching darkness, but were treated to a cow giving berth the following morning.
