I was flashed a few times by the motorway machines in June, and then when I got home, there was a charge from the hire company for £18 which is the charge that is paid when the police ask for driver details. Heard nothing since, and cancelled my credit card so no further payment made.

Question is, am I on a French database somewhere that will kick in when I hit France again? Who would I find out officially from?

I'm not sure, but I translate EU affairs and something came up about a year ago about making it easier for things like speeding fines to be enforced cross-border.  It sounds like the police in this case may have decided to drop the matter as soon as they found out you're not resident in France and the car hire firm isn't bothering to chase the admin charge.  To be honest though, I'd just pay them the £18, because there could be some mechanism that allows them to pursue you and do you for the costs on top and that could make for a nasty surprise!

If you have been fined you will be on a French database. If you ever want to return to France I suggest you pay the fine if there is one. It is possible you will recieve a bill through the post for the fine as the EU is in the process of establishing a database of motoring fines EU wide. At the moment you won't get points on your licence.

When you leave the UK via Eurotunnel or Dover docks the French cops are there, usually they don't even look at your passport but occassionaly they will examine it & bring up your details on screen. I guess this is where you could come unstuck & possibly any unpaid fine would increase as time goes by.

I suggest you contact the hire company, ask them if they have heard anything more & ask them what normally happens in these cases. If they have heard nothing more there is little else you can do. Its possible the French don't bother to pursue speed camera nicks on non French drivers. The UK does not, at the moment, although go thru a camera in Holland/Germany & you will recieve a bill.

Its worth pointing out that if a French cop catches you 50kph over the speed limit you can be banned on the spot.

Just cancelling a credit doesn't allways mean that nobody can charge anything to it afterwards,If you have made regular payments to a company i.e.Sky or similar arrangement they can still charge you months or even longer after the card has been cancelled.
Nothing to do with speeding but thought I would point out that unless you cancel the payment with the company the credit card will still accept payments even after cancellation.

On a different note (slightly) - I don't ever recall seeing a fixed camera in France without there first having been a warning sign that it was coming up.

I got flashed on a Spanish motorway 2 years ago - I actually got sent a fine through the post directly from the Spanish police (must have got my address from the hire car company).

I'm not proud to say that I ignored it (mainly because it was all in Spanish and as best as I could translate, I had to try and send some sort of cheque in EUR to pay the fine) and never heard any more. I was a bit worried when we went back to Spain last year and had to hire a car again - but had no problem.

I don't wish to be argumentative but I fail to see how a French cop can instantly ban a UK driver on the side of the road (msg 3).  As a UK citizen your licence is issued in the UK and only a UK authority can revoke it, surely?  The French can't make a fixed speed cam fine stick once you return to the UK, how are they going to  tap into DVLA's computer in Swansea and disqualify you from driving on the side of their roads?   Can't see it myself but if you know different ..........................................

The op was flashed in a hire car so presumabley with French plates. I does appear at the moment the French have no method of nickin non French driving licence holders for speed camera offences, but this is gradually changing as the cooperation between EU countries on driving & vehicle law improves.

I don't know whether the French have access to the DVLA computer, but certainly the UK police requested & obtained access to the Polish Vehicle licencing computer to crack down on the large number of uninsured/unMoT'eed Polish reg vehicles in this country. If you go thru a camera in some EU countries you will certainly recieve a fine at your UK adress. The DVLA will certainly supply vehicle details to other EU countries if requested.

If you do some googling you will find it is true that you can be instantly banned in France for being 50kph over the speed limit. Driving law has not been harmonised thruout the EU & you are subject to the law in whatever country you drive in. If you look on forums like pistonheads there is plenty about it. If you are banned in France in this manner, the ban is not applicable in the UK, or anywhere else.

They can ban you from driving in France,confiscate your licence and your car on the spot,they then send your licence back to the DVLA in the U.K.
