Happy New Year to all.

Have booked a ferry Dover-Dunk in August 2010. We want to travel towards the Annecy area and I wondered if anyone has done this trip and could recommend any sites there and enroute for stop overs.

Whilst I have driven many times in France, I have only had the van since April 09 but have done 2 or 3 long hauls in this country so I'm not phased (too much) by towing and I don't mind the drive.

Any helpful advice would be much appreciated. Have two kids, boy 12 and girl 17 going on 25 (bloomin teenagers...aaarrrggghhh).

Also can anyone recommend an overnight around Dover for the ferry? travelling from the Midlands.

Many thanks.

Blackhorse Farm CC site between Folkestone and Dover.

When we have travelled to Annecy we try to get down to Bourg-en Bresse for an overnight.- there's a municipal there.

If you want to save an awful lot in tolls from Dunkerque go through Belguim, Luxembourg then back into France & past Metz, Epinal, Besancon & follow signs Lons-le-Saunier to get back onto the toll autoroute for the last bit. The route as described is all toll free motorway until just past Epinal. Good campsite for overnight stop would be at Charmes about 15miles before Epinal.

The route I have described puts another 80miles on the journey but will save you 64€ in tolls in one direction & the cost of diesel in Luxembourg is around 80p/litre.

Would defintely recommend Blackhorse Farm Caravan Club site for the overnight stay.  It is conveniently located and is geared for one night stops/early departures etc,.  You usually pay before arrival, so that it doesn't matter if your arrival/departure times are outside normal office hours.  Some of the pitches are outside of the barrier system for ease of coming/going according to your needs.

Far better to get a good night's sleep on a proper site, than to kip at motorway services etc, IMHO.

If we don't cross over in the afternoon we usually stay at Black Horse Farm, its a good stopover. Going down through France, it will depend how far you wish to travel but the Municipal at Troyes is a convenient stop for your destination or perhaps here http://www.domaine-eperviere.com/ if you don't mind travelling a bit further. You will find plenty of reviews of both sites on here.

Bear in mind that a few insurance companies charge more for your trip if you visit more than one country - worth checking.

We stay at a CL just ousdide Dover, Lenacre Court farm, paid £8 last time including electricity. 200 miles and about 4 hours for us from Ashby de la Zouch. There's a big field and a hardstanding area and most people just stay hooked up ready to leave. It's just off the roundabout at the top of the hill before the drop into Dover.  We've used the municipal site at Laon as a stopover, it all depends on crossing times and how far you want to travel. Laon's a nice little place which used to be the capital of France (I think), well worth a visit.  There's a nice minicipal at Troyes, too...another place worth a stop.

Thanks for some really good suggestions. Any more for Annecy would be great.
