after several holidays in France and just love it so much, we are seriously considering buying a touring caravan on a site to use for our holidays. We dont have a car at present able to tow a caravan so thought if we buy a caravan in France on a site that suits then wouldnt have to rush to buy a tow car. We have 2 children aged 13 & 10 so would like a nice family site, no evening entertainment though, and preferably a pool. Any ideas, thoughts about this would be gratefully received. I understand most French sites charge around 250 euros a year to store a caravan plus pitch fees whilst there. IS there anything I should be aware about with regards to buying a caravan in France rather than here? Many thanks

If you are towing with a UK registered vehicle then make sure you have proof that you have paid TVA (French VAT), we store our (ex UK) van in France and always make sure that we leave the Certificate de Immatrication (I think thats what its called) on display in the front window when we leave it at the storage site. We had a letter from the French Douane one year as they check registered storage sites for non EU tax paid vans and if there is no certificate they can confiscate the van.
We store ours at a private house and pay €200 per year, this is close to Le Brevedent and he only takes 4 vans. €250 seems to be the norm in Normandy and Brittany, could say what sites further south might charge.
It certainly is worth the cost storing in France in regard to taking via Ferry every trip.

I have three sides, left, right and wrong - which one are you on?
You will pay more for a secondhand touring caravan in France whatever its age than in the UK. Look on http://www.leboncoin.fr/ for secondhand caravans, just put a caravan make ie Burstner, Hobby etc into the search. You can confine the search to the region you want to site the caravan.
French caravans over 500kg are registered & need an MOT(controle technique)every 2yrs. However if you buy a French caravan & tow with a UK car just put on a UK numberplate & it will be a UK caravan so a French MOT won't be needed. In practice tho if you buy a caravan near to where you want it sited I'm sure you could get it towed there no probs & that would be it if you want it permanently on that site. If the caravan was worth insuring I'm sure the site owner would point you in the right direction.
You could probabley buy a 'van already sited. Large campsites will have a list of sited vans for sale & then you would negotiate the sale with the 'van owner.
Obviously if you want to tour round in France every yr you would need to get the caravan serviced about every 2 yrs so you don't get wheelbearing probs etc.
If you want a van to tour around in I would have thought it would be easier/cheaper to buy one in't UK even if you store it in France.
Hi,
We have friends who live in Cork in S.Ireland, they have bought a touring caravan in France and keep it there. It is not stored on the site, but somewhere close by.
They stay on a site in the Vendee.
The caravan is brought to the site for them and the awning erected. They also hire a full size fridge freezer from the same people. They leave the awning up when they go home, it is taken down for them and the van towed back to storage.
I have been told how much this all costs, dont remember how much but I do remember thinking that it was a good price.
There would be no need for you to tow the caravan, if this is what you are wanting. In fact you dont even need a car once you get there as the site is so close to beach, town, hypermarket, you can walk to them.
If this is something that interests you I can find out more details.

There is a British Owned site that stores 200 vans for mostly British Owners and there are usually vans for sale throughout the year. If you are interested in buying a British Van contact them
You can search by department for 'caravanes'. They're not expensive, but they're also not as well equipped as those sold for the UK market. If you search forums like the AngloInfo franchise, there's usually a few ex-pats with 'vans for sale.
If it has a French immatriculation (it should have if over 500kg), then it should be separately insured to the towcar. That's the law.
Why not try clicking on my links & then looking at prices on UK ebay & then seeing which is cheapest, Floyd.
I would say to the op tho that they will be better off going for a German make such as Hobby/Burstner/Tabbert/Knaus which are more likely to remain waterproof than UK made caravans.

I did say that they're not expensive, but possibly not as well equipped as UK spec'd models. agree with you about the EU models being more hard-wearing, but it's down to the personal choice of the OP to make those decisions. all I gave was a choice for comparison.
I posted shortly after you and didn't see the links you'd put up. I realise now that they're leboncoin.fr links, for all of France.
All I was trying to put across was that as you live in France, its more difficult to compare prices France/UK, I travel between UK/France on a regular basis & I have say the prices across the board of anything secondhand in France is high compared with UK, from vide greniers(books 2€)/UK carboot sale(books 20p) to a '93 Peugeot405, 1500€ France/scrap metal UK. '03 Focus Estate 6000€ France/£3000 UK.
But back on topic, looking on Leboncoin you will see prices over 2000€ for 80s caravans compared with a few £100s for similar in the UK. It would depend on the size of caravan the op wants. If they want a large twin axle they would be better sourcing locally to their preferred site unless they want to buy a 4x4 to tow one from the UK.
If they want a medium sized 'van they will buy much cheaper & more easily in the UK & all they will need is a Mondeo to tow it down.
None taken - I got the wrong end of the stick, so apologies for that.
Yep! Second hand cars over here are a rip-off, but 'vans aren't too bad. There are lots of UK 'vans over here though. It's worth factoring in the extra costs of fuel/ferries/tolls etc if you buy in the UK and drag it over here. Also, depending upon what the OP wants, and where they site it - a 'shed' may just be the thing! Minimum outlay, but great hols down in the Med, where the weather may not do the same amount of damage as perhaps NE would do?
What about sites that do annual/permanent pitches for tourers? Is there a directory or something. We don't want a mobile home on a "park" among dozens of other mibiles. But a permanent pitch on a "proper" campsite would be lovely.
Anyone got any ideas?
