I have booked to go to la garangoire in the vendee through the camping and caravan club for the summer holidays. We are a family of 6, with 4 boys age 4 to 12. I have read some reviews and reports about poisonous caterpillars on the site that cause awful health problems and now i am scared stiff because my boys all have asthma, 2 of them very severe. I am now thinking of cancelling that site and trying somewhere completley different, but would only like to drive around 700KM from Calais max. Has anyone any ideas where we can go? We like good scenery and stuff for kids to do. I am also worried that we won't like the vendee area. I could just be in a major panic because it is our first trip abroad with the van, and everything seems a worry!

We stayed there last year end of august and have heard nothing about caterpillers, if you are in any doubt ring the site direct, there english is very good and I am sure they will put your mind at rest.
Its a great site for all ages and some people have tried to get on for years, without any luck.
We have booked for this year, as have many others.
We stayed just up the road at Domaine de la Foret in 2007 and 2008 and in the first year OH came out in awful spots which the very helpful pharmacist in St Julien des Landes immediately confirmed as being a reaction to the hairs from the caterpillars. OH had cream etc for the spots which were really itchy but it did take a couple of months for the reaction to disappear altogether. We were there in August but apparently the problem is usually earlier in the summer. In 2008 there was no problem at all and most people don't have the reaction to the hairs anyway, just if you are unlucky. I wouldn't worry about it too much if I were you.

We went to La Garangeoire last summer with our 2 boys, then aged 8 and 11. It is a lovely site, with lots of activities organised. They had a fantastic time and we really enjoyed our stay.We didn't come across any poisonous caterpillars - maybe we were just lucky?
The vendee is good as a beach type holiday - we went on to the Dordogne after, which I must admit I preferred as the scenery was stunning. Having said that, we are hoping to go to Le Pin Parasol (very near Garangeoire) this year, as we don't want to drive too far and want to be near the coast. I'm sure you will fine plenty to do to fill your time. Lots of people return every year to Garangeoire as they enjoy it so much!
We stayed there for 2 weeks last year ( kids 9,7 and 1yrold), there was no mention of caterpillars anywhere on the site (and for that matter nowhere in the area..ie information centres with medical info)
This is a brilliant site for adults and kids alike, very friendly and very young family orientated so not many teenagers, we were happy to let the older two cycle around the campsite and go shopping for the bread etc with no worries.........you will be disappointed if you bypass this site !
There is lots to do on site for the kids and don't forget a visit to Poy du fou (expensive) but fun !
We have stayed for the past few years just down the road at La Guyonniere and found loads to do.... velo rail, canoing on salt flats, surfing, cycling , chateau talmont, parc d'attractions ... to name but a few....
