OK its the 60 anniversary of the Arnhem 'bridge too far' attack by British and Polish airborne forces this coming weekend (17/18/19) 

Following on from our Normandy trip to Ranville and Pegasus bridge 'the boys' are off to Arnhem this weekend.

We will seek out a suitable campsite and enjoy the weekends events. We may even have a shandy or two  Lets hope it's good weather for the Polish Para regt drop on Saturday. Cardboard box and blanket are at the ready

Any campsite reviews will be posted on my return.

We went on a CC Touchstone holiday 10 years ago that spent one of the weeks in Normandy and took in Pegasus Bridge and Arromanche and War Graves cemetary.

It was very interesting with an excellent steward ( Jim) who ran the rally and was a mine of information.

The C & CC holiday rally stewards do agreat job also and its surprising how much you learn and can see on a guided coach tour of the area   

Just checked out the weather in Arnhem (aint the internet great)

Mr Sunshine for Friday/Saturday but chance of showers Sunday. I will settle for that (not much choice)

Well in case anyone is interested I just got back.

What a great weekend lots of 'veterans' about the place.

Loads of history to go and see first-hand.

The campsite we used was called Camping Warnsborn.

Nice quiet site with excellent hosts and all the comforts of home. Would not hesitate to recommend them. Will post a full 'review' in the campsite section soon.

Watched a lot of the anniversary on TV, very moving at times, a lot of brave people died through mistakes, such a pity. But then that is war. Glad you returned safely.

Mmmmmmm, May not agree with that in total, remember Winston Churchill fought in wars but that didn't stop him being the 'Greatest' Britain ever did it?

What can I say about the area though. Well if you ever visit you will see why the airborne had to land many 'klicks' from their objective. It's as if Arnhem and Oosterbeek were dropped in the middle of a forest. No way in the world could large groups of men and kit land near the bridges.

I have a new respect for all things Dutch. Lovely towns,houses,people, attitude. I think that the price of steel has shot up just to produce the required cycles for Dutch families. I have been to Amsterdam before and thought I had seen a few bikes in one place but wow, at the Para drop at Ginkelse Hei (open heathland) on the outskirts of Oosterbeek there were hundreds if not thousands of the things. I loved the ones that were fitted with motorbike style windscreens and had baby seats fitted to the crossbar so the 'little person' could sit and look out ahead.

Do you need to worry about knowing any of the language? No not a bit, everyone we met could talk English, and quite enjoyed showing that they could hold a conversation with you in 'your' language. This was everyone, the campsite host, the taxi drivers, shop assistants, people out watching the events, even the lady at the motorway services. Best of all they didnt make you feel stupid for not having more than a few words of Dutch. (French take note) Just don't try to talk to them in German.

I would never have given the Netherlands a second thought as a holiday destination prior to my weekend trip to Arnhem/Oosterbeek, that has changed and I would now love to take wifey and kids (not so small) there too to sample the Dutch attitude.

The Country is spotless and as a holiday destination I believe there are some nice attractions that would suit your children ie: the six flags.

Glad to see you had a great time.We spent two weeks touring wirh the two kids (12)in 2000, could not recommend it as a family holiday destination highly enough.
