St Jean de Monts is a lovely place, lucky you ! The beach is superb, the campsites around well equipped for families. There is mases to do in the area, from water parks to zoos and museums. I really, really recommend you get a small guide book called   'The Vendee' by Angela Bird. It is the best guide book of anywhere I have ever come across. It is a family guide so all the attractions are suitable for children, its not full of dull art galleries and expensive restaurants. Get this book and 2 weeks will not be long enough. You will return to this area over and over again. I just wish Angela Bird would write a few more guide books, as this one is superb.

We went there two years in a row when our children were small, but can't remember it much - the beaches were lovely, huge with shallow water and literally millions of tiny hermit crabs or "Bernard l'hermite" as they call them there.
Our eldest liked "going up things" and still does ten years later - there's a tall water tower with a tiny lift giving superb views of the surrounding countryside.
Also they loved the zoo at les Sables d'Olonne.

It's just a nice combination of pine trees and big sandy beaches, although we didn't find the towns of St Jean / St Giles particularly inspiring to be honest.

We went up that water tower too !! Fantastic views over the surrounding countryside. And we've been to the zoo at Les Sables. I agree St Jean isn't much of a place to visit (les Sables is much nicer) but the beaches are superb.

Coaterboy

Hope you enjoy La Yole, we stayed there for ten nights last year, first time in France, a fabulous site.  I would be quite tempted to go back again this year, not sure if I could convince other half about going to the same site.  The beaches were great.  I'd love to go back as we didnt get to Le Puy du Foy...maybe this year?

Enjoy

Hi, Our kids loved the castle at Talmont -St-Hilaire,ruins to look around and plenty of activities like archery, dressing up etc ,in the afternoon there was a brilliant joust. Hubby & older boys went carting near St.Jean the first time we went but can't remember where sorry.St- Gilles-Croix-De-Vie is lovely for a stroll in the evening, fab icecreams.
We have been to the area twice once staying at St.Jean and once further down at Pin Parasol, we had a great time at both & loved the area, also would definately reccomend Angela Bird's book. We have to go back as we still haven't got to Puy-du-Fou, have to make do with Cornwall this year but maybe 2011.

we booked at our main site from 2nd august for 10 days its called Camping Aux Coeurs Vendéens, this will only be my 2nd time in france and the first with the van, which to be honest im a bit apprehensive about the ferry and driving with the van, but saying that its never bothered me driving abroad before, just first a first time towing experience on the continent so better look out for us on the roads
also ordered the vendee book as suggested by sarah from amazon. thanks for all the info by the way, oh anybody know anything about the site we have booked? i found it in the alan rogers guide but cant find many reviews.
