Dunno where the airport comes into it, read post 5 on this thread for directions on the route you are taking. That is the normal signposted route & the easiest, theres no point in taking any other route thru Rouen unless you want to go sightseeing. There is a nice cathederal in the city centre.

Corneliusp - yes we do stick to the non-toll roads, and use the N15, but we're heading south on to the N154 when we get through Rouen. We find it straightforward and have never got lost or been held up anywhere.  I can send you the details if you email me.

I think what can throw people is they get confused with the blue signs for Autoroutes ( usually peages) and green signs for the N. Roads especially if it is their first visit. There are so many signs and also white ones for local towns that you can't relax but my advice is don't try to use a map but go with the signs you want be they blue or green.

Oh yes, I have enjoyed the posting so far. I don't want to cause world war 3, but as far as I can remember route A28 from Abbeville to almost Le Mans is toll free, as far as I cam remember, maybe someone could correct me.

Sorry about that.

People get lost in Rouen, as they attempt to wend their way from Calais sthbound towards Chartres, because it is badly signposted. It is also difficult to navigate using a map & from what I read on here a satnav is little better.

All you actually need is a small piece of paper with the following written on it:---

Thru longish road tunnel.

Follow sign 'Le Mans Elbeuf'

Follow urban dual carriageway for about 3 miles with no relavent signs at all.

Follow all subsequent signs 'Evreux'

Thats it.

Abbeville-Rouen is toll free, if you are going to Le Mans there is now a Toll rd open(A28)after you get thru Rouen You turn onto A13 direction Caen then onto A28 or you can of course use the old N138(now reclassified D438) If you are going Evreux & onto Chartres, Orleans etc you turn onto A13 direction Paris for a 2€ toll then onto N154 direction Evreux.

I am the last person to use toll rds long distance but for the sake of a couple of €s its worth it in this case.

We usually seem to end up coming back along that awful interminable road along the rail track, you know, the one with all the factories and traffic lights.....

I think we've managed to take a different route every time we get there! So if you see a white volvo pulling a van through the city centre along the BUS LANE... it's us!

Rouen - aka city of doom!

Ha Ha!
We drove round there too!
But Rouen does have a lovely old city centre with it's beautiful Cathedral (immortalised by Monet) so maybe we should all stop there for a while anyway and then consult a map

Yes thanks for the thread and info every one. We planned to try this route, this year with the thought that it might actually be as quick as going via Paris and a bit more interesting.

Regards Bob
