I think the most worrying thing, when you read the reviews, as I said before, is that these were not just opportunistic thieves, walking into an empty site whilst people were out.  As you say a lot of French campsites including our favourite in the Tarn are in exactly that riverside position, with a footpath into the site.  At this site tents were allegedly slashed whilst people were sleeping in them, and the contents of the storage pockets of the inner tents stolen.  According to the report this had happened before, and the thieves shine a torch around the tent, and it indicates dark patches where the double material pockets show up - and they cut the tent accordingly!  This is not just thieves taking the opportunity to steal from an empty tent - but to me, anyway, something much more worrying.  They (again allegedly) had a stanley knife - what would have happened if the campers had caught them, might it have been used in 'self-defence', who knows.

There is a response from the owner, which would indicate that this is not just one of those 'folk lore stories' which go the rounds, but a real event - sufficient for them to 'install security lighting and surveillance cameras'.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

I understand what you mean, this happened overnight, rather than during the day when a lot of units are unoccupied. As the owner has responded, I have no doubt that this happened, why would people make those allegations?

But the principle is the same, the site has a footpath adjacent, by which anybody can just walk into the site, and out again. Doesn't matter then, whether they have entrance barriers etc, if that part of a site is not secure.

What about the cameras though? It would be interesting to find out whether they caught anybody, hopefully PenninePlodder will get a satisfactory reply, and we'll all find out.

As promised here is the response from Le Moulin

Must say I feel much more reassured

Twice in June 2007, tents at the far end of the campsite were cut and items taken, mainly wallets with cash.  In September 2007, one similar incident occurred.

In 2008, we had one incident in June and one incident in September.

In 2009, we had one incident in June.

We have installed PIR lighting in various places and several fake cameras.

We did install surveillance cameras at the far end of the campsite but with limited success.  The thieves appeared to know where they were and avoided them.  It is also very difficult to capture significant images at night, especially over long distances and with so many trees, caravans and other obstacles.

Before the 2009 season, we closed off the far end of the site and put up a small barbed wire fence.  This protects the end of the campsite quite successfully.

However, the length of the river is a right of way for fishermen and, as such, must remain open for pedestrian access at all time.  We are not allowed to put up a fence.

We are constantly battling with the local and regional authorities to change this but in the meantime, we are limited with what other measures we can implement.

Discussing the situation with colleagues who own campsites in the region and beyond, we discovered that we are by no means the only campsite to have this problem. Other campsites in the area had similar incidents around the same time, but most places tend to hush them up.

With several colleagues who own campsites in Montrichard, St Aignan, Loches, Tours and Ballan-Miré, we now communicate fully and each time any campsite has 'nocturnal visitors', we phone each other up and step up security on our own sites.

Last year, we took the decision to personally warn all campers down at the far end of the campsite to be on their guard.  The warning seemed well received by campers and we had no further issues.

We also organised internal rotas of surveillance by staff and regular campers who were happy to help.

For the 2010 season, we have employed a full-time night watchman and will continue with the other measures we already have in place.

The Trip Advisor comments are written by people who have had bad experiences and I fully understand their distress.

However, some are totally exaggerated and mis-representative of the facts.

We have a good relationship with the local police force who also patrol the area at night, and who do come onto the campsite when there has been an incident.  However, they are also realistic and know that there is little chance of finding evidence/catching the thieves, and the only real course of action is the practical route of cancelling credit cards and filling in a form for insurance policies.

We take each incident very seriously.  We love this campsite and view the thefts as violations of our own property as well as our campers.

It's also important to underline that for the thousands of people who stay with us each year, the thefts only affect a small proportion.

A number of people read the Trip Advisor reports last year and contacted me with their concerns.

Hi,
We are due to arrive on 26th of July, whilst looking at places of
interest on the web I stumbled across this

/“/Robbed at night here while sleeping in our tent/”/

I found about three incidents, how common is this?

Alarm bells are ringing out loud, as normally our two kids sleep in the
awning.

Email 9th August:-
Hi,
Just arrived back home this afternoon. Just wanted to drop a line
thanking you for an enjoyable stay without any problems what so ever.
Particularly enjoyed your Tuesday evening night walk down to the
Chateaux....

I hope I have been able to reassure you that we are doing everything we can to prevent thefts and that campers are as safe on our campsite as they would be anywhere else.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions

Best wishes

Doesn't sound like they could do much more than what they are, it would reassure me if I was going. Thefts occur everywhere after all. And at least they're being honest and not trying to cover it up.

That sounds like a good comprehensive reply to me, and very prompt. We once stayed at the Municipal at Langres which is situated on the battlements of the walled town but also has several public footpaths running through it. There was a notice on reception warning people to take care of personal possessions. So perhaps its a more common problem than people realise. I think on any campsite with open access you do have to take this into account by making things more secure. Some sites have safes for hire. In previous years we have had stories of people being robbed as they over nighted on motorway Aires. Because people were so tired when they arrived they made no effort to secure wallets etc and a relatively easy task for someone to force a door and reach in for such items. At the end of the day what ever steps a campsite takes will always be overcome by a determined thief so we all need to take care.

Thanks for posting this, PenninePlodder. It is obvious that the problem stems from the open access onto the site which they cannot do anything about. I can well understand their frustration and upset at having this happen to them and their site.

But employing a night watchman should set people's mind at rest (especially if he could arrange to bring a ferocious dog with him).

Although it is a pity that they have had to resort to this, if it keeps the thieving so-and-so's away, then it will be well worthwhile. At least they are prepared to do what they can, rather than sweep it under the carpet, which is a good thing.

Thanks for posting this

We are looking to go here in Sept and I was really worried after reading some of the reviews on Tripadvisor. I tend to take reviews with a pinch of salt as I think you are more likely to complain or write a review if you have had a bad experience.

I think this campsite looks wonderful and i feel much more at ease now about staying there for a week.

I have posted a review of the site.... but briefly...

Lovely idyllic site, pitched on the bank of the Cher just a wander from a beautiful chateau. The weather was equally wonderful and the surrounding area, a joy.

Our pitch and that of our friends (next door) were of generous proportions water, electricity and sanitary facilities are all within easy reach.  The regular displays put on by the local balloonists were wonderful.  The on site bar was more than adequate and the pool was well used (but not by us).  The shop was fine, we were able to get emergency provisions and a daily order of delicious fresh bread each morning.  When relaxing on the site, we watched the fishermen, very few of whom caught anything although loads of fish could be clearly seen!

As for the thefts reported previously - none on site that we were aware.  We were obliged to come home early due to a theft, but that was due to our daughter being mugged outside our home in the UK. (She's fine)

There is nowhere perfect, and I suspect you were all waiting to hear what marred the perfection of the site. - Other people! - Marching through our pitch, riding their bikes through and otherwise not keeping an eye on their kids who all ran around loose.  The Italian shouting generally, the Cockney lady, practising mothering from her deckchair (shouting loudly at her kids in their tent). The dutch fathers, who encouraged kids to throw stones into a campsite fountain when they had been told by the owner not to, or the one who watched his boy pulling the flowers off the hydrangea bushes. English kids on bikes who look on a gap between car and van as a dare..... Bah humbug, I got to the point of almost digging mantraps.

On returning from this haven,  we all immediately looked at adult only sites.

We stayed at Moulin Fort last summer and felt completely safe.

A recent thread on this subject did comment on the rare nature of these events and in general shouldn't spoil your trip.
