I kept following this as we'll be going to France for the first time. I called in barclays (my own bank) to ask about there charges abroad, they said 2.5% so off I went to open a nationwide account especially to load the holiday money into.
The assistant wouldn't let me open a current account as I already had another current account elsewhere! She said I needed to sign an agreement to let nationwide change all my direct debits over to them and that would close my barclays current account!

Does anyone know if there's a way around this as I have 2 current accounts with different banks and never come across this problem before. I just really want it to use it for holidays as you all say above.

Thanks

We went online and have applied to open a (flex I think) current account, it asked about other accounts and gave the option to transfer which we declined.  Haven't heard back from them to say that they've refused us or anything!

We opened ours on line, too and still have two other current accounts where we pay bills from.  However, I'm not sure that the concessions about no fees/etc apply to new account holders.

So many people opened flex acc just for use abroad that N/Wide will only let you open one if you use it as a current acc and pay salary or pension etc in on a regular basis.

When N/W brought out this rule the way around it was to open a esaver(ie internet only savings acc.)an esaver needs a current acc. with the same bank to pay money into it, so they allowed you to open a flex acc. Dunno if this still applies by worth a try.

Havin' said that, the days of the high interest current accs. like Halifax are over for the time being so nowadays a N/W Flex acc. is probabley as good a current acc. as any.

Anybody can apply for a Post Office credit card tho & this is fee free for € transactions.

Thanks everyone, i'd rather not bother with a credit card, its just too tempting for my OH!!!!

I'll look into applying online for the esavers account, that might work.

Thankyou.

Back from a very pleasant, if snowy, week in Berlin: didn't have major problems with money but did have difficulty finding ATMs: not on every corner as in a British city. There were one or two at major stations and traffic interchanges (HBhf, Zoo, Friedrichstrasse &c) otherwise mainly inside banks.

We also found supermarkets and restaurants who wouldn't take credit cards (or debit cards - specifically they didn't want anything to do with VISA).  These all tended to be "lower end" places, presumably saving on VISA charges.

It was no problem for us but people travelling without euros might have to go out of their way to use cards ...

Going (only a little) off topic, apologies. Is there something unusual about German treatment of credit/debit cards? Not taken so readily?  My son had problems a few weeks back trying to get a couple of hundred euros out of a cash meachine - they'd give him fifty euros but no more; no explanation. Eventually he had to get fifty out of one ATM, fifty out of another and so on ...   Is there a limit to what you can withdraw at any time?

I'd be interested to know as we're off to Germany on Sunday - should I be getting more euros here?

I have not had that experience, I usually get 200/300 euros at a time but not that often as I try and use credit cards whereever possible. Perhaps it might have been to do with the type of card being used. Maybe he needs to check with his bank. What we have found in Germany is that we have had no problems in buying fuel, especially in the well know brands of service station using a credit card. There is a supermarket group called REWE that accepts credit cards but most other don't. The biggest problem we have had is not being able to use our Maestro or Delta cards in supermarkets like Netto/Aldi/Lidl.

When the discount supermarkets such as Netto/Aldi/Lidl first opened here they wouldn't accept cards at all.  However, I think they soon realised how much business they were missing in this country, where nearly everyone shops with a card these days.

I've got a Post Office credit card that I use abroad as there is no charge for the transactions.  You just need to ring them before you go to let them know you'll be using it.  As long as you clear it when you get home, its fine.

It says here - http://www.myczechrepublic.com/basics/czech_currency.html - that euros and other currencies are not widely accepted. Presumably you would have to pay a charge to change them .... safer with the crown/koruna perhaps?
